The Middle Temple is one of the four neighbouring Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English bar as barristers.
The Middle Temple is the western part of "The Temple", the headquarters of the Knights Templar until they were dissolved in 1312; the awe-inspiring Temple Church still stands as a Royal Peculiar and the parish church of the Inner and Middle Temples.
Middle Temple Hall is at the heart of the Inn, and student barristers are required to Keep Term by dining there, followed by lectures or readings, for a minimum number of nights for several terms.

It was originally constructed as the church of a monastic complex known as the Temple, the headquarters in England of the Knights Templar.
After the destruction of the Templar order in the early 14th century, the Temple became Crown property and was let to two groups of lawyers that evolved into the Inner Temple and Middle Temple, which are two of the four Inns of Court.
The temple also served as an early depository bank, sometimes in defiance of the Crown's wishes to seize the funds of nobles who had entrusted their wealth there.

It seems that the lawyers first obtained a footing in the Temple in 1320 as tenants of the Earl of Lancaster, although it was not until 1346 that a large scale influx was seen, when the Knights Hospitallers leased their newly acquired asset to ‘certain lawyers’ in two separate allocations at ten pounds per year.
Middle Temple Library and Serjeants' Inn were among the first casualties, being wrecked by bombs on the 30th December 1940.
Middle Temple Hall suffered a hit the next day and less that two weeks later Mitre Court was left as a gaping hole.

The first trustworthy mention of the Temple as an inn of court is found in the Paston LeUers, where, under date November 1440, the Inner Temple is spoken of as a college, as is also subsequently the Middle Temple.
The Temple had been the seat in England of the Knights Templars, on whose suppression in 1312 it passed with other of their possessions to the crown, and after an interval of some years to the Knights Hospitailers of St John of Jerusalem, who in the reign of Edward III.
Of the Inns of Chancery belonging to the Inner Temple Cliffords Inn was anciently the town residence of the Barons Clifford, and was demised in 1345 to a body of students of the law.

The history of the Temple begins soon after the middle of the twelfth century, when a contingent of knights of the Military Order of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem moved from the Old Temple in Holborn (later Southampton House) to a larger site between Fleet Street and the banks of the River Thames.
An inscription on the Round recorded that it was consecrated by the Patriarch Heraclius on 10 February 1185, in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It is a greco-roman temple, begun by Ptolemy III in 237 BCE and took twenty-five years to finish.
Nearly the whole temple was buried in sand until the 1860s, with a village built over the top of the buried columns.
