Topic: Middle of Nowhere

THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE by Ridley Pearson
MIDDLE OF NOWHERE is the latest of Ridley Pearson's police-procedural novels with protagonist Lou Boldt.
The book opens in a prologue with the murder of a woman who it seems had no reason to be killed --- and the widespread opinion is that she might not have died if it were not for a bad case of "the Blue Flu" that has hit the Seattle Police Department.
MIDDLE OF NOWHERE is another great book from an author whose thrillers are always highly satisfying.

OK, "The Middle of Nowhere" is certainly not "In Sides", but it is almost as catchy, experimental and delicious as its predecesor.
However, at least for me, "The Middle of Nowhere" 's story is presented in four parts: The first one goes from the opening track, "Way Out" to "I Don't Know You People"; the second part is the song "Otono" (a.k.a.

Review | Middle of Nowhere by Ridley Pearson
Middle of Nowhere falls short of its billing as a blockbuster thriller, but it is nevertheless likely to heighten Ridley Pearson's reputation as the author of one of the strongest series in contemporary crime fiction.
Fortunately, Middle of Nowhere, like its predecessor, The First Victim (1999), focuses not on made-for-TV-type wackos but on bad guys with chillingly believable motives: revenge, jealousy, misplaced loyalty, guilt and greed.
Boldt spends so much of Middle of Nowhere exhausted, that when adrenaline-fueled heroics come at the story's end, they are all the more amazing and authentic.

 Middle of Nowhere
In the Middle of Nowhere is the compelling true account of 18 year old nurse Terry Augustus and John Underwood, a young born and bred cattleman she found flat on his back in ward 3 of St Vincents' Hospital, nursing a serious spinal injury sustained while mustering cattle.
After five long years of corresponding, John and Terry married and moved to their new home – a tent and a newly drilled bore in the middle of nowhere.
Their love for each other was only matched by their love for this ‘last frontier’ in the heart of the Territory.

Flak Magazine: Review of Orbital, Middle of Nowhere, 00.00.00
But what's interesting about The Middle of Nowhere is that while it packs rich, pop-laden samples in abundance and is gorgeously melodic, it lacks some of the multilayered subtlety that made In Sides and Orbital II so amazingly fruitful to revisit, time and time again.
This is not to say that The Middle of Nowhere is as repetitive or straightforward as anything churned out by Information Society, the Utah Saints, or any of the tracks found on the Prodigy's first terrific (but limited) album, The Prodigy Experience.
The Middle of Nowhere may not measure up to the best work the band has done, but it does deliver an amazingly smooth and enjoyable techno environment to its listeners, making the best of creative samples and the superb vocal talents of the formidable Alison Goldfrapp.

Middleness can be the stuff of American sitcoms, but rarely American movies, unless they're suggesting, like American Beauty (1999), that middleness is a sign of spiritual bankruptcy.

The joke is the way the director sometimes frames these middling people and their Barcaloungers and bingo parlors like characters in a Sergio Leone Western, while the soundtrack gives you Ennio Morricone-style twangy guitars and a lone harmonica and horsey clip-clops.

The "middle of nowhere" of the title signifies where one of the climaxes of the novel takes place, among some high-tension towers outside of Seattle; it also signifies the way Boldt is caught between the personal and the professional in a no-man's-land of conflicting loyalties.

Recorded live at the National Centre for Popular Music in Sheffield, England, Middle of Nowhere represents the atmospheric and breakbeat inoculated sounds of Mark Barrot: aka Future Loop Foundation.

In short, Future Loop Foundation pulls it off with The Middle of Nowhere, precisely because it was recorded live, in the middle of somewhere.

Middle of Nowhere Summary & Study Guide
The conflict between loyalty and duty to the individual and to the community is crucial to Pearson's novel Middle of Nowhere.
Boldt struggles throughout the book to situate his loyalties; he often describes himself as being "in the middle of nowhere," both personally and professionally.
The personal and professional problems of the character are linked closely to the social themes of the novel, showing that private concerns and public concerns must often go together.
