It is almost as if Eliot wished to place Middlemarch on a microscopic slide and then blow up the image to fit an IMAX screen, from which the reader could see, hear, and feel the images jump off the pages in unforgettably realistic power.
The final judgment on MIDDLEMARCH is that it shows in a universe of detail and character delineation the interlocking lives of characters who suffer mightily, but in whose suffering fall short either of heroism or tragedy.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Middlemarch
Middlemarch and its inhabitants are confronted with change, with all the corresponding fear and the excitement of the new.
Surprising as it may seem from its quiet provincial status, Middlemarch proves a crucible test of character in which the selfish and the weak-willed are expelled as dross, while the industrious and altruistic are purified to attain new levels of radiance and clarity.
But Middlemarch is not just three stories happening at the same time in roughly the same place, it is a consistent exploration of the way individuals (and communities) cope with change.

Middlemarch takes place in the years leading up to 1832, the year of the Reform Bill, and this bill was for the benefit of middle class men.
As the Victorian world was a complex, multifaceted fast-paced arena, powered by industrial innovations and sweeping reforms that added many threads to the fabric of society, so, too, were novels that attempted to weave the spin-offs from the reforming blanket of Victorian England and cover the feelings and philosophies of that time period.

And in much the same way as one’s life doesn’t really have a plot, neither does “Middlemarch.” Some people get married, a few people die, people are happy or not as it may be.
In contrast, “Middlemarch” is set against the backdrop of the passage of the Reform Bill of 1832.

 The Novel: VI
George Eliot always resisted the constraints and anxieties of writing in instalments, but Middlemarch was much longer than any of her earlier works.
Rather than risk publication in four volumes, author and publisher were persuaded to side-step the circulating libraries by issuing the novel at two-monthly intervals, in eight half-volume parts at 5 shillings each.
The experiment was a modest success: sales of each part, bound in 'attractive but not bookstallish' paper covers, amounted to over 5,000 copies; Mudie's threatened boycott of the novel failed to materialise; and Eliot found that part publication (in this relatively relaxed form) suited the complexity and scope of her story.

Middlemarch is a text particularly well-suited to this task, for both positioning theory and Eliot's novel are concerned with the construction of social reality.
Fisher, in contrast, asserts that, in Middlemarch, “The self is the margin where it is in motion and transformation, just as the age is its transitions, and science is the frontiers of science” (192).
Thus to see Middlemarch as anything less than an agent of the change it suggests needs be brought about, is to fail to see the real connection between positioning theory and the novel, between narratives in fiction and lived narratives.
