Middlesbrough FC turned professional in 1889, returned to amateur status in 1892 then became professional for good in 1899.
Middlesbrough is a town in North-East England, with a resident population in 2001 of 134,855.
Middlesbrough is situated on the south bank of the Tees on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, recently featured on television as ‘Heartbeat Country’.The Yorkshire Dales are only a short distance away.

Middlesbrough's defense was that the friendly referred to was arranged long before the League fixtures came out, and also that Ironopolis arrange friendlies to clash with their League games and then advertise them as "the best match in Middlesbrough tomorrow"
The directors of the Middlesbrough Ironopolis Football Company are in treaty with the Middlesbrough owners for the rental of a piece of ground on the north side of the existing football field in order that a cycling track may be laid down and other improvements to the ground effected.

 Ayresome Park - Before Ayresome
Middlesbrough Football Club was formed in 1876 by members of Middlesbrough Amatuer Cricket Club who were looking for a way of keeping fit in the winter months.
Middlesbrough were to occupy the Linthorpe Road Ground for over a decade, from 1879 to 1903, and while they were in residence they built a small stand on the north side of the ground, which would later be transported to Ayresome Park.
Middlesbrough went on to have several successful years in the Northern League, winning the title three times in four seasons between 1893 and 1897.

Middlesbrough Ironopolis Football Club came about following a desire by some members of the existing and amateur Middlesbrough Football Club to have professional football in the town.
After getting the Association to sanction its somewhat peculiar name, the Ironopolis gave an order to a well known agent for a full team.
Ironopolis came into being in 1889, joined the Northern League in 1890 and had a most successful time of it winning 3 Championships and entered the Football League in 1893.
