Middlesex County is located at the eastern end of Virginia's Middle Peninsula region.
In the county, the population was spread out with 19.20% under the age of 18, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 30.30% from 45 to 64, and 22.50% who were 65 years of age or older.

According to Josiah H. Combes Genealogy, Chapter III: "…an Inventory of John COMBS' estate was made in Middlesex in 1675… two John COMBSES were living around the mouth of the Rappahannock at this time, and it seems that both were living in the present Middlesex County.
Notes: Middlesex was not formed until 1673 so the referenced 1669 inventory would have been in Lancaster Co VA except that no inventory has been found for any COMBS in Lancaster County.
Notes: Thomas TODD was of the Baltimore MD TODD Family and inter-related to the Gorsuch-Lovelace (COMBS and Roe) families of Lancaster Co VA and Talbot County, MD.

 Middlesex County Virginia Records
Middlesex County was formed from that part of Lancaster County on the south side of the Rappahannock River sometime between 24 March 1669 and 22 May 1669.
At that time it was bounded on the north by Old Rappahannock County, on the west by New Kent County, and to the south by Gloucester County.
Rather than send the court records to Richmond, the county clerk hid them in the swampy lands near the headwaters of the Piankatank River until the conflict was over.

On 7 Feb 1706/07 Thomas Tinsley of Essex Co, VA sold 1,100 acres in Essex Co, VA to Robert George and John Chidell (Cheadle) of Middlesex Co, VA. This land was on the Rhappahanock River and branches of the Muttopony.
At a court continued and held for Middlesex County on the 5th day of March 1733 This will was this day proved in open court by the oaths of Richard Greenwood, George Blakey, and Elizabeth McTryor, witnesses thereof and admitted to record and is recorded.
Robert George died 21 Jan 1733/34 in Middlesex County and was buried 23 Jan 1733/34.

According to Smith, Edward Clark was born circa 1655 in England or Virginia.
It was in Lower Precinct, the subdivision comprising the southern third of Middlesex County.
William Downing died in 1698; his widow, Elizabeth, presented what she called a newer version of his will to the Middlesex Co. court; but the court ruled the will presented by Edward and proven by witness Edward Weatherstone was more acceptable.
