BBC - BBC Four Documentaries - Not Cricket
In 1968 Basil D'Oliveira, a brilliant South African-born cricketer who had made his home in England, became the centre of a row that rocked the political and sporting establishment.
There is incontrovertible evidence of collusion between the South African cricket authorities and the South African government; whereas in England the MCC always said they were just cricket people and had nothing to do with the government.
His public statements were always, "I am not saying anything, I am just trying to play cricket with the best in the world." That became a fantastically powerful message, though, because it was so patently absurd that he wasn't allowed to.

With the ball Middleton were buoyed by the knowledge that they had 6 extra overs to bowl at their opponents, and they started well, Stan Ball picking up a couple of quick wickets in a fiery opening spell, one clean bowled the second caught and bowled.

It is a tragedy (for cricket and South African sport in general) that D'Oliveira's contemporaries were denied the opportunity to play at the highest level.
