Pictures, poems, pixies... POEMS: Midir and Etain
Midir was lonely without his foster son's company so one autumn day, just before the feast of Samhain, Midir set off to visit Aengus Og.
After a while Midir went to Etain's quarters to find her, for he couldn't bear to be parted from her for long.
Midir set up the chessboard and waited for the king to make the first move, but Eochai was still reluctant to play.

  Midir
In Irish mythology Midir (also spelled Midhir) was a god who, as all gods of both sexes had to do after being defeated by the Milesians, lived in the sidh of Bri Leith.
Midir was the husband of Fuamnach, but later fell in love with Etain, receiving Aengus's help to make her his new bride; this provoked Fuamnach's vengeance against the young new wife, causing her several disgraces, until some years later Etain married Eochaidh, by that time the High King of Ireland.
As Midir won, he asked a kiss from Etain as his prize, but Eochaidh refused, breaking his word and banishing Midir from Tara.

 The Wooing of Etain
Then Midir set out with his fosterling to have speech with Eochaid, and they came to Uisnech of Meath in the center of Ireland, for 'tis there that was Eochaid's house, Ireland stretching equally far from on every side, south and north, to east and west.
Midir knew that it was Etain that was in that shape, and so long as that fly was attended upon him, he never took to himself a wife, and the sight of her would nourish him.
Midir reproached Fuamnach exceedingly and said to her that she should not go from him were it not for the power of the sureties that had brought her.

It symbolised, I think, the winning of life back to the world after an enforced thraldom: the renewal of Spring: in other words, Etain is a Gaelic Eurydice, Midir a Gaelic Orpheus who penetrated the dismal realm of Eochaidh, and Eochaidh but a humanised Gaelic Dis.
It is not Persephone, gathering flowers on Enna, whom legend remembers here, but the not less beautiful love of Apollo's son, slain by the treacherous earth in the guise of a grass-hid asp as she flees from her pursuer: nor is there word of Demeter, nor yet of Aristæus.
For in the Gaelic mythology, Midir, too, is a son of light, a servant of song, a son of Apollo, being of the divine race of Oengus the SunGod, Lord of Life and Death.
