By 1914 Midland had a population of 2,500 and, in addition to the county courthouse and the two banks, the city had a cotton gin, three lumber yards, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches, and an opera house that could seat 300 patrons.
By 1950 215 oil companies had offices in Midland, and the city's population had increased to 21,713; by 1960 the population was 62,625.
Midland Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1950, offered a new standard of medical care for people living in the region, and the Midland Symphony opened in 1953.

The Midland Main Line is a main railway line in the United Kingdom, part of the British railway system.
The Midland Main Line was built in stages between the 1830s and the 1860s, as three lines which met at the Tri Junct Station in Derby.
The line between Matlock and Rowsley is in the hands of the Peak Rail preservation group.

The Cheshire Lines, operating an express route between Liverpool and Manchester, via Warrington, in addition to several branches, belong jointly to the L.M.S. and the L.N.E.R. Another joint L.M.S. and L.N.E.R. line is the Midland and Great Northern Joint, extending from Saxby and Peterborough to King's Lynn, Cromer, Yarmouth, and Lowestoft.
Midland influence is also seen in the crimson lake which is now the standard colour for passenger coaches and for many classes of express locomotives.
The former originated in a line in the Barrow district that was mainly intended for the conveyance of minerals.

Crossing under the North Western main line at Lancaster, the express ran to Heysham, 267.7 miles from St. Pancras, where a steamer was waiting to take passengers to Belfast.
After Shugborough Tunnel the main line passes Milford and Brocton (129.5 miles) and at Trent Valley Junction (133.1 miles) it is joined by the original main line from Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
The passenger, observing lines coming in from all directions, may like to know that Crewe is the junction for important lines south-west to Shrewsbury, for Hereford, South Wales, and the West of England ; west to Chester and Holyhead, for Ireland ; south-east to Stoke-on-Trent and the Midlands ; and north-east to Manchester.

The Midland Main Line was built in stages between the 1830s and the 1860s.
The first part of the Line was built by the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway and its subsidiary the Stonebridge Railway from Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, on the London and Birmingham Railway, to Derby.
On the same day in 1840, the Midland Counties Railway, which ran from Derby to Leicester, was extended from Leicester (its previous Campbell Street Station being replaced by the current London Road Station) to a temporary station on the northern outskirts of Rugby.

 Midland Mainline - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Midland Mainline had serious plans (so much so that a new fleet of trains was purchased) for a regular service between London St Pancras and Leeds via Nottingham, the Erewash Valley, Sheffield and Barnsley but these were rejected by the (now defunct) Strategic Rail Authority.
Midland Mainline are currently in the process of re-configering the Meridian units, reducing the nine-car sets to eight-car sets and increasing the four-car sets to five-car sets to better provide for seating demand.
Midland Mainline is currently the exclusive opperator at London St Pancras, however, they are due to be joined by Eurostar from November 2007, and later a high-speed domestic rail opperator to Kent which will also use the high speed line.

The line to Raisby Hill serves a major quarry, and is the last surviving stretch of a line which ran from Bishop Auckland to Hartlepool, crossing the main line just north of Ferryhill.
Unfortunately our driver did not know the former Midland main line through the Erewash Valley, so we would have to stand there until either the points were fixed or a replacement driver could be found.

This is because everything is on hold due to privatisation which is reputed to be costing an additional £700 million each year, on top of reorganisation costs in excess of £l billion, simply to provide the present level of service.
How much better if this money had been invested in the railway itself: on electrification of the Midland main line, on opening new stations, on replacement of clapped-out rolling stock, track and signalling, rather than on a vast new bureaucracy.
Any prospects for Midland main line electrification and proposals to put the North TransPennine route under the wires have also been shunted into a siding.
