Ex-Rock Island Rocket EMD E-8 locomotive #652 was rededicated and restored to service on the Midland Railway Saturday, May 14 1994 culminating over five years and more than 8,000 man hours of volunteer labor in restoration which climaxed with the engine's being repainted into its original Rocket paint scheme.
The Midland Railway began operation August 8, 1987, with the Governor Hayden Special inaugural run to Nowhere.
Railway by the Standard Steel Car Co. The "lightweight" coach has 4 wheels, 5x9 roller bearing, is 81-ft. long, seats 96, and weights 92,100.

The Midland Railway is a heritage railway headquartered in Baldwin City, Kansas.
Midland purchased the line from Baldwin City to Ottawa, Kansas from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1987, and began running excursion trains on part of the line later that year.
Midland's Scout program is one of the few in the country to offer a railroading merit badge.

The Golden State was a combination effort of the Rock Island and Southern Pacific Railway Co. The Rock Island portion was form Chicago to Santa Rosa, NM and the Southern Pacific from there to Los Angeles.
However, in late 1985, Ron Dringenberg and John Killian, members of the Midland Railway Association, purchased the 652 and transferred it to Kansas City where it was stored until January, 1990, when restoration began.
RPO #30 was built by Pullman Standard in August, 1931 for the Kansas City Southern as #60.

 History of the Midland Valley Railroad - Tulsa-Sapulpa Union Railway
The Midland Valley, while it was unfortunate in the fact that its hopes of handling a large traffic in coal were not fulfilled, was on the other hand fortunate in being located where the first discovery of petroleum in large quantities took place- namely, the famous Glen Pool, near Tulsa.
The Midland Valley was about seven miles east of the first Oklahoma oil development, and the Frisco about the same distance to the west.
The Midland Valley quickly built a seven-mile spur and enjoyed good earnings on machinery and oil well supplies of all descriptions going into the filed, and a fine movement of crude oil to the refineries in the Port Arthur Sabine district.

 The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company Abandonment Exemption in Sedgwick County
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) concluded that the proposed abandonment should not impact crucial wildlife habitats, current state-listed threatened and endangered species, species in need of conservation, or KDWP-managed public recreation areas, as long as the abandonment activities are restricted to the rail line ROW.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment - Bureau of Water (KDHE) stated that if abandonment activities are expected to disturb one or more acres of soil surface, then the applicant must submit a Notice of Intent for a construction stormwater discharge under Section 402 of the Clean Water Act.
The Kansas Department of Agriculture - Division of Water Resources (KDA) noted that a state permit would be required if the proposed abandonment would involve construction of a dam, or in any way change or diminish the course, current or cross section of a stream or watercourse in the state.

 Baldwin City Signal: Midland remembers railway's past
Fox and his organization, the Midland Railway Historical Assn., will be here all Labor Day weekend offering folks young and old the opportunity to see area countryside from inside historic rail cars.
The rides for the Midland Railfest happen every year, but this year the old Santa Fe Railroad Depot turns a century old, and organizers from both Midland and the Santa Fe Trail Historical Society thought this weekend would be as good as any to throw a birthday party for the old station in Allen Park.
The Midland group also is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

 St. Louis Railfanning - Central Midland Railway
The Central Midland Railway runs on the former Rock Island St. Louis Subdivision from near Kansas City, MO to Rock Island Junction, near St. Louis Missouri.
The Rock Island operated the line until their bankruptcy in 1980, although some mystery surrounds the date of the last train, as the line was in such poor condition, it is possible the last through train ran in 1979.

Although Bentley, located in Eagle Township in northwest Sedgwick County, was established as a town in 1888, It wasn't incorporated until November 12, 1959 when it became a third class city of the State of Kansas.
Bentley was named for its founder, Orsemus Hills Bentley, who was a well-known lawyer, historian, author, and leader in Wichita in the 1880's.
He also served on the board of the Kansas Midland Railway which used to run through town.
