	Midnattens Widunder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Midnattens Widunder (English: The Monster of Midnight) is a folk metal album by the Finnish band Finntroll.
		It was released in Finland in 1999 by Spinefarm.
		The album is notable for being the first full-length album released by Finntroll, and is the closest thing to a fl metal album the band has ever created, featuring a less folk-influenced and more raw style that eventually subsided in the band's later works.

		Starting the chain of hybrid fl metal rubbed with Finnish folk instruments, Midnattens Widunder came across as an entirely fresh and original look at what could be done with the application of a few thinking caps (and beers).
		Even now, in the world where half of the new surge in Scandinvian metal bands decided to add the hype-term ‘folk’ somewhere into their genre categorisation, this album (and Fintroll for that reason) still stand out above the water, at the tip of the iceberg.
		Midnattens Widunder has a raw edge that is sorely missed in Jakten’s Tid.

		After the demo recording, the other members of the band, Samu Ruotsalainen (from Barathrum and Rapture), Samuli Ponsimaa, Henri Sorvali (from Moonsorrow) and Sami Uusitalo joined the band.
		The record label Spinefarm got interested in the band then, and made a contract, yielding the album Midnattens Widunder (English: The Wonder of Midnight or "Midnight's Wonder) (1999) as a result.
		The next step for Finntroll was the album Jaktens Tid (English: The time of the Hunt), which was released in 2001.

		After enduring the long intro on Finntroll’s debut album, Midnattens Widunder, I expected the music to be full of snot-nosed hobbits, gallivanting around an oaken table and singing drinking songs — the typical Tolkien-esque picture, rendered in oh-so predictable medieval folk scales.
		The most wonderful thing about the songs of Midnattens Widunder are the melodies, which show a nice contrast to Katla's gruesome vocals.

		I guess this is the weirdest band I’ve heard in a long time, I thought Finntroll was a Black Metal band but after hearing Midnattens I really do not know which genre they are, a mixture of Black, Folk, even a slight spice of gothic Metal, and some other elements I can’t describe.
		He, I knew you were a good reviewer, a friend of mine has a music store and she has told me the exact same thing as you just did in this review about this album.

		Thanks to Harold, I got a hold of it and have listened to it quite a bit for the last few days.
		Midnattens is basically a straightforward epic/fl metal album with a very strong melodic sensibility.
		Jaktens Tid is to Midnattens Widunder as Sepultura's Roots is to Chaos AD or Amorphis's Elegy is to Tales from A Thousand Lakes.

		Well, just to begin with something elementary: I am not really a fan of fl metal for the "fl" releases are pretty often very boring and overproduced.
		In each of the nine songs of the album, you can see that the band is always trying to caputre traditional finnish folk music within a sound of hard- and darkness, also involving clean vocals on the tracks "Vätteanda" and "Midnattens Widunder".
		To me, this is definitely one of the most surprising fl metal outputs within the last years for me not having heard such well talented musicians trying to combine folk and metal in an interesting manner before.

		When Finntroll was born, in that mysterious night, I was propably sleeping at home, heh, because at that time I didn´t know any of those guys.
		I know, though, that Somnium was drinking and doing his goth-project "Shadowworld" with Katla and some other guys that night, and in the wee hours of the morning, while the other members went to buy some more beer, he got bored and started to play the riff from "Midnattens Widunder".
		We will most likely reduce a lot of the synth-work (all the pads/choirs whatsoever), and try to get a bit more closer to the "Midnattens Widunder"-sound, as we have discussen on this matter within the band.
