OU'D HAVE TO be a complete wet blanket not to have a good time reading John Berendt's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Berendt, who had edited and written for magazines in New York for 20 years, moved to Savannah, Ga., charmed by the isolated eccentricity of the place.
Eastwood's "Garden" is one scrubby, sorry-ass patch of land, denuded of beauty and largely untended.
I can't say that "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is the most incompetent major studio film of the past few years (that would be "The Fugitive"), but you can't blame it for not trying.

Midnight in the Garden is the story of New York journalist John Kelso (John Cusack), who travels to Savannah when Town and Country magazine hires him to write a story about the much-ballyhooed annual Christmas bash held by millionaire Jim Williams (Kevin Spacey).
Midnight in the Garden would have worked better as a morality play had the "good" aspects of John's struggle been developed more fully than in a series of disjointed, uneven scenes.
One of the reasons Midnight in the Garden is a pleasure to watch, despite its lengthy running time, is the strength of the actors' performances.

In case you really haven't been following the literary world in the last dozen years, John Berendt is the author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," a real-life murder mystery set in Savannah in 1981.
"Midnight," which was published in 1994, stayed on The New York Times best-seller list for four years, went through 101 editions, was made into a movie and increased tourism in the sleepy Georgia city by 46 percent, according to information provided by Berendt's agent.
Where "Midnight" is marked by intrigue, Southern wit and warmth, "Falling Angels" is punctuated by tragedy, family squabbles, deceit and political scandal as labyrinthine as the canals of Venice.

While Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil reads like a thoroughly engrossing novel, it is actually a magical non-fiction rendering of a secluded and hauntingly beautiful city in which an infamous murder took place.

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
Admittedly, Midnight lacks anything resembling the tragic love story that stands at the quiet center of Gatsby; it mostly i nvolves the closeted and uncloseted gay subculture of Savannah, which has no precise counterpart in Fitzgerald's novel (apart from the rather loose parallel of a "criminal subculture").
But both works are atmospheric mood pieces about a nouveau riche millionaire who throws famously lavish, well-attended parties and is eventually brought down by a violent crime related to the connections he maintains with the working class, "rough trade" in particular.
The villains and the good guys in Cop pola's film are easily spotted and never deviate from their assigned moral roles--on one side, venal insurance scam artists, their corrupt lawyers, and a psychotic wife beater, and on the other, their abject victims and idealistic opponents.

``Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'' is a book that exists as a conspiracy between the author and the reader: John Berendt paints a portrait of a city so eccentric, so dripping with Southern Gothic weirdness, that it can't survive for long when it's removed from the life-support system of our imagination.
Clint Eastwood's film is a determined attempt to be faithful to the book's spirit, but something ineffable is lost just by turning on the camera: Nothing we see can be as amazing as what we've imagined.
He's a charmer who has the misfortune to be dating Mandy Nichols (Alison Eastwood), and so the movie has to hustle him out of sight to free Mandy for her frictionless dalliance with Kelso--who mutters vaguely about his ``track record'' in romance, and has to be instructed to kiss her after their first date.

In "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," director Eastwood's adaptation of the John Berendt fact-based novel, he lets his actors loose.
As if in a long-winded jazz session (the kind of musical experience that Eastwood loves, incidentally), performers Kevin Spacy, John Cusack, Jack Thompson and a scene stealer called the Lady Chablis, honk, blow and wail to their heart's content.
"Midnight," which finally draws to a halt after two and a half hours, has a lot of acting, a bit of soul and no rhythm.

SPLICEDwire | "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" review (1997)
The creative latitude given director Clint Eastwood for "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is almost unprecedented in a studio picture.
Centered around an intriguing true story of a gay Savannah socialite who murdered his lover and set the town abuzz in gossip, "Midnight" is about characters, characters and characters.
Spacey contributes to the puzzle with a cheeky, wonderfully elusive performance that lends Williams a devil-may-care veneer, even as he wiles away the days in a jail cell awaiting trial.

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
There are a range of characters in the story from a bizzare transvestite to the New York writer who can't sleep without the noisy sounds of New York cabs, horns and other commotion being played on a cassette recorder by his bed.
As for the "evil" portrayed in this film, one scene deals with a very grandmotherly, nice old voodoo practitioner who, with the accused killer and the New York writer, are at the grave of the murder victim late at night.
While my wife and daughter believe the movie is a good character sketch, it is more than evident that everything in the movie points viewers away from Jesus and towards spiritism and the acceptance of bizzare, unnatural, occultic immorality.

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL, Murder Mystery Movie Review - MurderMysteries.com
With a plot as sticky and sweet as a summer night in the Deep South, Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil combines a tale drawn from a real life murder mystery with a smattering of off-beat characters worthy of a Tennessee William's story.
Based on the popular novel of the same name, the film entices viewers with the unique and quirky worlds of both genteel society and the dark underbelly of drugs and death on the wild side of the city.
From the stately mansions of Savannah's legendary squares, darkened cemeteries guarded by ancient oaks dripping with Spanish moss, to a seedy bar where a flamboyant transvestite, "The Lady Chablis", commands both laughter and pity, Midnight In The Garden Of The Good And Evil, provides viewers with new insights into the human experience.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil . Austin Chronicle . 11-24-97
There are many amazing things in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, not the least of which is the fact that these are all real Savannah citizens being portrayed here conclusive proof, as if any were needed, that truth is indeed stranger (and more perversely humorous) than fiction.
Eastwood Sr., for his part, manages the wonderful ensemble cast remarkably well, especially for someone more inclined toward action and Western films (Bird and Bridges of Madison County excepted), but the real star here is the scene-stealing Lady Chablis, who deserves special recognition for her brash, saucy, utterly effervescent portrayal of herself.
Unlike anything else out there right now, Midnight is a wholly original creation, crossed with shadows and light and the everyday madness of Savannah and its remarkable citizens.

here's some powerful mojo working in Clint Eastwood's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." But unlike the magic of the movie's cackling voodoo priestess, the spell doesn't quite have the anticipated effect, unless Eastwood intended to put the audience to sleep.
Sonny, a sly good ol' boy, needs Kelso's opinion like the Queen of England needs another handbag.
But it is a surprisingly hidebound view of Southern Gothic myth from a man who thoroughly debunked the fiction of the gallant frontier in "Unforgiven" and managed to make a good movie out of the simplistic "The Bridges of Madison County." Eastwood seems overwhelmed by the rich complexity of Berendt's stellar book.

Ev, as everyone calls him, used to be a star reporter in New York, before he ran afoul of a vindictive mayor (what an extraordinary notion!) and got banished across country to hack out metro pieces for the Oakland Tribune.

As if that weren't enough, the drunk-driving death of a young female colleague -- just after Ev has attempted to seduce her -- dumps the story of Frank Beachum (Isaiah Washington), a convicted killer who claims to be innocent and faces execution that very night in San Quentin, right in Ev's self-absorbed lap.
