Midway Plaisance is a linear park located near Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois approximately 8 miles from the downtown "Loop" area and midway between Washington and Jackson Parks.
The Midway Plaisance began as a vision in the 1850's of Paul Cornell, a land developer, to turn an undeveloped stretch of infertile land south of Chicago into an urban lakeside retreat for middle and upper class residents seeking to escape the crowds and dirt of the booming city.
In 1999, a new master plan for the Midway Plaisance was unveiled by the University of Chicago and the Chicago Park District.

A midway at a fair (commonly an American fair such as a county or state fair) is the location where amusement rides, entertainment and fast food booths are concentrated.
This area, which was concentrated on the city's Midway Plaisance, included carnival rides - among them the first Ferris Wheel, Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show, and other attractions.
In the years after the Exposition closed, midway came to be used as a common noun to refer to the area for amusements at a county or state fair, circus, festival, or amusement park.

on two Midway Plaisance gardens--Readers Garden and Winter Garden, a joint project between the Chicago Park District and the University of Chicago, began September 5, 2002, when the lawn panel bounded by Ellis Avenue, 59th Street, Woodlawn Avenue, and the North Plaisance Drive was fenced off as a construction zone.
In line with the Midway Framework Plan, the next project, being planned by consultants under a planning grant, is a Children's Interractive Play and Learning Garden, to be located between the Metra/Canadian National tracks and Stony Island Avenue, east of which, just in Jackosn Park, is the Perennial Garden.
