Midway class aircraft carrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Midway class vessels were originally conceived as a thought experiment to determine the effect on the size on an air group of including an armored flight deck on the tonnage of an Essex-class ship; the resulting calculations showed that the effect would be disastrous for air group size.
Unlike the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers, for which the amrored deck was part of the ship structure, the Midway class retained their "strength deck" at the hangar deck level and the armored flight deck was part of the superstructure.
Midway had one last war in which to participate, and was one of the six aircraft carriers deployed by the US against Iraq in the Gulf War.

Aircraft carriers are generally accompanied by a number of other ships, to provide protection for the relatively unwieldy carrier, to carry supplies, and to provide additional offensive capabilities.
Aircraft carriers played a significant role in World War II, the most notable of which is considered to be the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
