  Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-25 - Scramble
The MiG-25PD was introduced into service in 1979, Fitted with the new RP-25M Saphir 25 radar, based on the Saphir-23 developed for the MiG-23 fighter.
It was a great improvement over the Smerch-A, having slightly greater range and, more significantly, pulse-Doppler operation to provide a look-down / shoot-down capability.
The Saphir 25 was complemented in later MiG-25PD production by a TP-26Sh-1 "infrared search and track (IRST)" sensor mounted under the nose to provide passive target detection and tracking.

The first prototype of MIG - 25 lifted off in 1964, but till now MIG - 25 remains to be the quickest combat airplane, having set a lot of altitude, speed, and climb-up records.
As the MIG - 25 was designed for flights at the 25-km altitude with a speed, which is three times higher, than a speed of a sound, it doesn't have such a high maneuverability, as the most of the lighter fighters MIG - 29, which were created for low-altitude aerial combat.
However, legendary MIG - 25 "Foxbat" - is the only one airplane in the world, which will fly you to the boundaries of space, and then you will have the first-eye view, that the Earth is round, and sky is fl.

Nevertheless it was a good high-altitude interceptor, but its career was cut short because the USSR concentrated on low- and medium altitude fighters, and Mikulin dropped the AM-35 engine to concentrate on the AM-38 for the Il-2.

The MiG-29 light tactical fighter, developed by the RAC «MiG» in the early 80-s, remains till now one of the world’s most mass-produced and renowned fighters.
The MiG-AT is intended for training the pilots at the primary, basic and advanced stages to satisfy the lead-in fighter requirements and also for maintaining pilots’ skills in formation flying.
The fighters developed and produced by the RAC «MiG» during the passed decades continue to be successfully operated by numerous air forces worldwide, having undergone upgrade programs that give the earlier-generation fighters new capabilities and make them able to respond to existing threats and to effectively solve the missions assigned to the users’ air forces.

The MiG-25P is produced by RSK MiG, which is based in Moscow and the Sokol Aircraft Manufacturing Plant Joint Stock Company at Nizhni Novgorod in Russia.
This may have been done partly to get the trainer out as fast as possible, but it did have the benefit that the trainee's cockpit environment was almost identical to that which he would use in service.
One MiG-25PD was modified with a 25 centimeter (10 inch) nose plug to accommodate a retractable inflight refueling probe, and was also fitted with additional navigation gear to help it find a tanker.

The spec for the MiG 25 was written in 1958 and the design drawn up by 1961, the prototype flew in 1964, by contrast the first F-15 flew in 1972 after a development period of approx four years (how things have changed).
Ye 155 is the Mikoyan designation for the aircraft design, MiG 25 is the operational designation for the same plane, they are not different, that is why the later design models I have shown also carry the 155 number on their nose.
The requirement for the MiG 25 was issued in 1958 and was intended to counter the B-58 Hustler, the Blackbirds development was unkown at this time, thats essentially the first reason why the MiG 25 was unable to catch it, it was never meant to.

Russian Aviation Page: Mikoyan MiG-25 Foxbat
Initially it was tested in a remotely piloted aircraft (they had no test beds capable of flying at the intended speeds, I suppose), and from there the idea to use it in a missile was born.
For its use in the MiG E-155 (the MiG-25 prototype) the engine was further developed, but this time the designers used as a basis the R-15K, the variant tested in the cruise missile, simply because it had been tested at speeds higher than those attained by the original.
The problem is that the engine begins to act like a ramjet at speeds in excess of Mach 2.5 or so, and the turbine's speed is increasingly dictated by the flow through the propulsion duct rather than by fuel control.

In addition, there were design concepts for derivatives for the conventional strike and strategic nuclear attack roles; variants with variable geometry ("swing wings") for low-speed maneuverability, or lift-jets for short takeoff; a strategic cruise missile carrier; and even a 5-to-7 seat supersonic airliner; but these alternate ideas came to nothing.
Belenko said that the redline speed of his Foxbat-A was Mach 2.5, and that at speeds of Mach 2.8 or more the engines tended to run out of control and burn up.
As a result, in November 1976 the MiG OKB was ordered to develop an improved MiG-25P on a fast track basis.

The MiG's high-tech sensors worked on vacuum tubes; its weapons were bulky and balky; and its ominously engines - thought to be adavcned turbofans - were just very large turbojets.
Once he exposes the MiG for what it is, he balances - vacuum tubes aren't entirely obsolescent, and turbofans wouldn't have worked at high mach speeds anyway - but never gives the reader the impression of what it's like to fly or even sit one of those monsters.
The MiG is one of the largest fighters in the world, certainly a challenge for its pilots, but Barron never makes his MiG any more real than the one that scared the military into developing new planes and missiles against it.
