Scifilm -- Reviews, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949)
Joe only becomes violent when he is attacked and tormented by the men and women of "civilization." So although Schoedsack, Cooper, and Co. did make another "giant ape in the city" movie, they turned the story on its head to give us a very interesting—and entertaining—commentary about mankind itself.
A couple of notable examples are when the cowboys lasso Joe during the exciting first encounter with the gorilla (rather reminiscent of the cowboys roping the dinosaurs in THE VALLEY OF GWANGI), and when Joe trips a running horse.
Joe's actions are a direct result of the situations he is put in, and the results of his actions are believable and natural.
