Mihai Eminescu (pronunciation in Romanian: /mi'haj e.mi'nes.ku/) (January 15, 1850 – June 15, 1889), born Mihail Eminovici, was a late Romantic poet, the best-known and most influential Romanian poet celebrated in both Romania and Moldova.

Eminescu was influenced by the work of Arthur Schopenhauer, and some have suggested that his most famous poem, "Luceafarul" was based upon an older German work or the Katha Upanishad.

Eminescu would consider these often unexplainable phenomena in the wider context of the universe in which he found a complex system of obsessions and relations.
Consequently, Eminescu as the 'National Poet' in Romania is considered quintessential for the self-definition of Romanian national identity in a society where regional identity often supersedes that of national identity.
Mihai Eminescu is considered one of the most renowned poets of his time and his influence extended after his death.

 Eminescu, Mihai Criticism and Essays
Eminescu is one of the most important figures in Romanian poetry.
Eminescu's enduring interest in his country's identity, along with the fact that he wrote in the Romanian language, made his work relatively inaccessible outside of his homeland and may have denied him some of the celebrity of his contemporaries among European poets.
For Constantin Ciopraga, Eminescu was “the conscience of the nation” of Romania, and Ilie Badescu observes in Eminescu's journalism an early articulation of sociological studies in that country.

 CHAPTER VI
Eminescu asserted that: 1) by introducing forms borrowed from the more advanced civilizations of other nations, the thread of historical development was broken; 2) the hasty attempt at reaching, without the support offered by culture and material prosperity, the advanced level of Western civilization resulted in a gap between real civilization and its appearances.
Eminescu emphasizes the importance of the creative capacity of each national community in the process of building a civilization.
Eminescu’s doctrine is confirmed by the theories (of the "One-Dimensional Man") expounded by Herbert Marcuse, a member of the Frankfurt School, and by Arnold Toynbee, an English historian and sociologist, about "parallel civilizations." Thus, the thesis of the unity of civilization is rejected.

Veronica's romance with Eminescu started some ten months before her husband's death in 1879.[1] Veronica was thrilled to become "the official muse" of the poet, who was not only very famous, but also a romantic lover, showering her with flowers and poetry.
First, Eminescu does not trust Veronica enough: "Forgive me, but whenever you tell me about your suitors, you make my heart ache."[11] It is true that she consciously fuels his jealousy in an attempt to make herself more desirable in his eyes.

 Mihai Eminescu and Romanian Poetry
Mihai Eminescu (1850-89) was born in Botosani, the seventh of eleven children.
In 1876, his mother died, and Eminescu became a journalist, continuing to write the greatest of Romanian poetry until 1883, when he complained of headaches and became certifiably insane.
Beneath these expressions lay a mythical cosmology and subjective pantheism, and Eminescu also added an historical perspective that viewed contemporary Romania as a falling away from a crystalline and luxuriant pre-Roman society he called the Dacian.
