Its tone is similar to that of a clarinet, although a bit reedier.
Unlike the similar mijwiz, the arghul only has fingering holes on one of the instrument's pipes, and the drone pipe has a detachable length that allows the player to alter the pitch of the drone.
Arghuls are played in Egypt and other Arab nations as an accompaniment to belly dancing and other types of Arabic musical performances.

The average cheap mijwiz is in the key of stick, and I don't know where to get better ones.
Mine is actually close to the maqam rast, which is sort of like a major scale, but has a neutral third (halfway between a major and a minor third), and so sounds strange to western ears, but it is a useful maqam for many tunes.

An improvisation on the Middle-Eastern mijwiz; auditory roughness profiles and tension/release patterns.
For the present study, an application was created that uses the aforementioned model to estimate the roughness of natural signals with arbitrary spectra, as well as roughness profiles of short musical pieces.
The application was used to examine if and how the pattern of tension and release within a stylized improvisation on the Middle Eastern mijwiz (double clarinet) relates to roughness changes.

 Roughness profiles and tension/release patterns - Pantelis N. Vassilakis - 149th ASA/CAA meeting - 2005
In many such cases, the increased importance of auditory roughness as a sonic and sonic-organization device is accompanied by a decrease in the importance of other relevant devices.
For example, the Middle Eastern mijwiz (two paired single-reed pipes) is constructed and performed in ways that limit the possibilities for extensive exploration of dynamic, pitch, tonal, and timbral (other than roughness) contrasts.
As a result, when Western raised/trained listeners are confronted with a musical piece such as the one used in the present study, they continue to employ their familiar strategies to parse the incoming sound, reaching an interpretation that differs from the composer’s / performer’s expressive intent.

However, this instrument may be looked upon as a larger and deeper-toned relative of the Turkish saz, to which it could be compared in the same way as the viola to the violin in Western music.

An old man enters the scene carrying a derbake (a small drum made of a clay cylinder and stretched goat skin), followed by couple of other men with their nay and mijwiz (the nay is a single long bamboo flute and the mijwiz is a short double barreled high pitched flute).
Then this opens way to improvised singing; a woman enters the scene with a jug balanced on her head and is joined by others, as if competing.
A derbake, nay and a mijwiz were added in order to keep the men going in the cold weather (it helped stimulate the blood pressure to produce more energy).

Pantelis Vassilakis - Papers - Auditory roughness and musical tension profiles
Within the Western art musical tradition, such devices include contrasts in terms of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tonal center, orchestration, performance technique, sensory dissonance (auditory roughness), etc. Performance practices outside the Western art musical tradition place increased importance on roughness for communicating expressive intent, often accompanied by a decrease in the importance of other relevant devices.
For example, the Middle-Eastern mijwiz (double clarinet) is constructed and performed in ways that limit the possibilities for most sonic contrasts, relying mainly on the exploration of narrow harmonic intervals and their corresponding rough sounds.
We estimated the roughness time-profile of a recorded, stylized improvisation on the mijwiz using SRA (Vassilakis; http://www.acousticslab.com/roughness), a custom, online roughness analysis application that incorporates a previously-tested roughness estimation model [Vassilakis, P.N. "Auditory roughness as a means of musical expression," Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology 12: 119-144].

Another essential wind instrument is the double-clarinet type, the Mitbiq in Iraq and the Mijwiz المجوز, literally "doubled," in Lebanon and its vicinity.
Unlike flute types, the Mijwiz and other double clarinet types are played by a process known as "circular breathing," which allows the performer to produce a continuous non-interrupted sound.

Masterful songwriting, ornamented by Castro's ardent vocals and dreamlike lyrics, are relieved by hypnotic and utterly stoned instrumental passages.
