Salo was leading the championship, until he span out in a race which Hakkinen went on to win, and eventually take the championship.
Salo quietly points out that it is not his birthday but Hakkinen’s, and the fax is quickly taken away.
Mika made his Formula One debut at the Japanese Grand Prix in 1994 with Lotus, finishing in 10th position, which he tells me was the best moment in his career.

Salo, 35, told Radio Finland in an interview that the decision to retire had been his own, and he had arrived at it over the last three months.
Toyota's statement on Wednesday said: "(Toyota) and Mika Salo have come to a mutual agreement to cease their collaboration from the end of the 2002 season." Toyota team president Ove Andersson thanked Salo and McNish for their contributions over the last two years in preparing for the Japanese manufacturers' Formula One debut in 2002.

Mika passed Frentzen easily but Frentzen made a driving mistake and cut off one corner by driving through the grass area and managed that way to get back in front of Häkkinen - Mika passed him again, though, but obviously lost some valuable seconds.
He was 25 seconds in front of Salo when he went to his first pit stop in lap 24, but the refuelling took almost half a minute and after two laps he retired because of tyre problems.

Salo did a tremendous start and came up to fourth, Villneuve damaged his left rear tyre in a battle with Alesi resulting in Villeneuve had to let pass the whole field and had to come to the pits for new tyres after lap one.
