is currently listed as Near Threatened, almost meeting criteria B1+2c (extent of occurrence <20,000 km2, fragmented and declining habitat), C1; C2a (population <10,000 individuals and declining >10% in 10 years/3 generations).

Encounter rates are based on number of times I encountered pheasants on the trail each day in a study site.
They are known for their pheasant populations, so densities there are likely to be higher than average.

The habitat requirement of this pheasant, as listed in field guides, are: forested and grassland habitats between 1600 and 3300 m in elevation.
Using land use and elevation data from the Taiwan Forest Bureau, GIS analysis of these field guide descriptions is compared to analysis of habitats from which this pheasant has been studied over the past 15 years: primarily Chamaecyparis, Tsuga, mixed, and broadleaf forests inside Yushan National Park.
In the case of the Mikado pheasant, both estimates suggest this pheasant has adequate available habitat and should not be considered a threatened species.

The maroon oriole, the mikado pheasant, Swinhoe's pheasant, the Lanyu scops owl, the tawny fish-owl, Hodgson's hawk eagle, the pheasant-tailed jacana, the fl-faced spoonbill -- these are some of the bird species listed by the Council of Agriculture (COA) as endangered in Taiwan.
In fact, two years ago BI had already taken four Taiwanese endemic bird species-the mikado pheasant, Swinhoe's pheasant, the Taiwan tit and the Taiwan hill partridge-off its critically endangered list.
There has been no substantial growth in the populations of other rare bird species, but with the increasing popularity of birdwatching in Taiwan, rising environmental consciousness, and the introduction of practical measures for bird protection in many localities, birds are nonetheless clearly receiving better treatment.
