Mikael's base was the province of Tigray, which by now enjoyed a large measure of autonomy and from which Mikael raised up large armies with which he dominated the Gonder scene.
Mikael continued in command until the early 1770s, when a coalition of his opponents compelled him to retire to Tigray, where he eventually died of old age.
Mikael's brazen murder of two kings and his undisguised role as kingmaker in Gonder signaled the beginning of what Ethiopians have long termed the Zemene Mesafint (Era of the Princes), a time when Gonder kings were reduced to ceremonial figureheads while their military functions and real power lay with powerful nobles.

Traditionally, the beginning of this period is set to the date Ras Mikael Sehul deposed Emperor Iyoas (7 May, 1769), and its end to Kassa's coronation as Emperor Tewodros II (11 February 1855), having defeated in battle all of his rivals.
One week later, Mikael Sehul had him killed; although the details of his death are contradictory, the result was clear: for the first time an Emperor had lost his throne in a means other than his own natural death, death in battle, or voluntary abdication.
Then Mikael Sehul was defeated in the Battle of Sarbakusa and the triumvirate of Fasil, Goshu of Amhara, and Wand Bewossen of Begemder placed their own emperor on the throne.

Emperor of Ethiopia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Although the Emperor of Ethiopia possessed unlimited powers over his subjects, his councilors came to play an increasing role in governing Ethiopia because many Emperors were succeeded either by a child, or one of the incarcerated princes, who could only successfully leave their prisons with help from the outside.
As a result, by the mid-18th century the power of the Emperor had been largely transferred to his deputies, like Ras Mikael Sehul of Tigray, who held the actual power of the Empire and elevated or deposed Emperors at will in their struggle for control of the entire realm.
The Emperors of Ethiopia derived their right to rule based on two claims: their descent from the kings of Axum, and their descent from Menelik I, the son of Solomon and Makeda, Queen of Sheba.

In some writings the beginning of the event is associated when Ras Mikael Sehul, governor of Tigre, was involved in the murder of King Iyoas I in 1769, and, instead, appointing the son of another king as the new emperor.
Following the use of the term and this event, scholars developed a theory of "disintegration of state" in their political analysis of the period.
When the child king Iyoas 1st (1755-1769) succeeded to the throne upon the death of his father Iyasu 2nd (1730-1755), Ras Mikael Sehul begun to challenge the central authority and occupied the office of prime minister (Ras Bitweded).
