Mike Atherton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atherton lost his first match in charge but England managed to beat Australia in a morale-boosting final test and, although the rubber was dead at this point, England had not beaten Australia in the previous 18 test matches.
Atherton claimed in his autobiography that he answered 'no' when asked if he had anything in his pockets because he had thought Burge was refering to nefarious substances (resin, lipsalve etc).
In itself Atherton was not breaking the rules - he pointed out himself that plenty of bowlers improve their grip on the ball by rubbing their hands on the pitch - but he was certainly stretching the spirit of the game.

Radio National - The Sports Factor - 22/11/2002
Mike Atherton: Yes eventually, when I was about 14, he came back into the house one day and said that I’d been selected for the first team for the very first time when I was 14, and I asked him who had I replaced in the team, and it was actually him that I’d replaced.
Mike Atherton: Well I did, and it went down in history as a kind of little folklore around Lancashire that it stood for ‘Future England Captain’, I’m afraid I’m probably not at liberty on this radio station to say what it did stand for, but it certainly wasn’t that, and it’s unrepeatable I think.
Mike Atherton: I was signed by Lancashire in the months before I went to Cambridge university, and the coach at the time was a chap called Peter Lever, who all the listeners might remember as an England bowler in the mid’70s and actually toured Australia on that infamous Lillee and Thompson tour in ’75.

Mike Atherton : I'm disappointed the selectors didn't pick one young player to fill the gap at number six, with the batting line up looking experienced and settled it would have been the perfect opportunity to pick an academy player.
Mike Atherton : Not at all, no. Throughout the time I sat on selection there was never any bias towards north or south or to any county in particular.
Mike Atherton : I think we did play against Bodyline bowling - modern day, quick line bowling often has three or four bounces and over but the batsmen these days have helmets and chest guards and so they are much more protected than batsmen in the 1930s.

It was apparent that the Atherton years were to be ones of struggle and defeat.
Atherton today is a metropolitan sophisticate, comfortable in his new role as journalist and broadcaster.
