When Mike Babcock '48 retired from Polytechnic School in 1998 after 18 years as Headmaster preceded by 15 years as the Upper School Director, he left behind a legacy of dedication and love for the place where he spent more than 60 years of his life.
As a student at Poly, Babcock was well aware of the consequences his mischievous acts could cause, and he recalls how one day in middle school: "A teacher picked up a fellow by the seat of his pants and his shirt and threw him out the door of Gosney like a torpedo.
Babcock described his time at Poly as "pure fun." But once, before security guards patrolled the campus, Babcock and trustee Stender Sweeney were assaulted by several armed men.

Mike Babcock, a former captain with the McGill University Redmen, was named head coach of the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings on July 14, 2005.
Babcock, the third McGill player to coach an NHL team (Lester Patrick guided the N.Y. Rangers; George Burnett served in Edmonton), was a two-time all-star rearguard at McGill from 1983-84 to 1986-87, where he also served as team captain and won the Bobby Bell trophy as team MVP.
TSN has learned that Mike Babcock has officially turned down the Mighty Ducks' offer of a one-year contract extension and sources say now that Babcock has indicated he won't be returning to Anaheim, he is headed to the Detroit Red Wings as their new head coach.

Detroit marks the seventh coaching stint for the nomadic Babcock, a native of Saskatoon and has lived in six Canadian provinces and four US states (including his new residence in Michigan).
Babcock graduated from McGill in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and also did some post-graduate work in sports psychology.
