Mike Howlett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mike Howlett (born April 27, 1950) is a Fijian-born musician and producer based in the United Kingdom.
Howlett originally intended Strontium 90 to consist of himself, Sting, Summers and drummer Chris Cutler, but Cutler was unavailable and so Copeland was recruited, brought in by Sting, with whom he had already been playing in an early incarnation of The Police.
Howlett taped several demos of the band, including the very first version of Sting's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" which was the first recording of the song ever made; he also taped a Paris Gong reunion concert in May 1977, which marked the first time that the future Police played together live.

The 10,000 copies cut with the original mix were scrapped and a new, radically different version was recorded under the control of producer Mike Howlett.
Howlett introduced the idea for a new intro featuring a speeded organ chord going from low to high, overlaying one playing high to low.
With the addition of a new bass line by Howlett the song was radically different from the original album version.

So many of them are in the business of commodity rather than the love of music that it hardly came as a shock when they completely misjudged what they had on their hands.
While being good-looking and/or seeking to draw the maximum possible attention to ones self was hardly a revolutionary idea in the music industry (even during this time), there existed a handful of bands that ran a bit wild with the style-centric angle of New Romanticism.
On the occasions when I profiled local music during my short-lived stint as a professional writer, I always sought to be as encouraging to whatever bands I was covering as possible, whether I actually enjoyed their music or not (invariably, it was almost always “not”).

The five-song Telecommunication EP has a catchy tune or two, but it wasn't until AFOS entered the studio to make A Flock of Seagulls with producer Mike Howlett that they developed a style of their own.
Relying on guitarist Paul Reynolds' U2-influenced textural wash, distended strains of synthesizer and some fancy studio maneuvers, the band's inadequacies (mainly dumb lyrics and limited conceptual range) fade into the background on their debut LP, overtaken by listenable, danceable techno-rock that proved to have broad commercial appeal.

Police Academy by Strontium 90 CD
Strontium 90: Sting (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, bongos); Mike Howlett (vocals, bass); Andy Summers (guitar); Stewart Copeland (drums).
When Gong bassist Mike Howlett made this demo recording back in 1976, he inadvertently brought together the three men who were soon to attain worldwide fame as the Police.
With Stewart Copeland coming off a stint with art-rockers Curved Air, Sting rebounding from jazz group Last Exit and Andy Summers having played with Soft Machine, it's not surprising that much of POLICE ACADEMY treads the murky waters of jazz-rock.
