  Michael Kaluta biography
Kaluta is only the third illustrator I've profiled who is younger than I. He's the only one of these 100 who has actually been to my home.
Kaluta placed Lee's outrageous and improbable characters in rollicking, wild and violent worlds that were impossible to create on the stage.
Kaluta's reinterpretation is faithful to both the heart of the screenplay and the spirit of the film.

Mike Kaluta is/was popular penciler best known for doing The Shadow at DC and he still works in and outside of the comic industry.
Mike Kaluta said Joe Orlando gave him freedom, but Joe Kubert took over his books and he ran things with an iron fist and actually drew over his artwork without asking/telling him about it.
Kaluta said had he just talked to Adler it wouldn't have been a problem, but since it was on paper people that he was requesting doing things differently it became a huge stink.

Some history from Mike Kaluta: SIM: There as a great deal of confusion about DC's The Shadow and the artists who were supposed to be drawing it -- Toth, Berni Wrightson and even Jim Steranko.
KALUTA: Wrightson wanted to do it really badly, as can be seen by that ad page he did, but he was doing Swamp Thing and enjoying that.
She met artist Michael Kaluta while working on their sci-fi play, Starstruck and was lured out of television, into the exciting and less profitable world of comic books.

Specialty press publisher American Fantasy is publishing a deluxe illustrated edition of The Dreamthief’s Daughter - a new Elric of Melniboné adventure - and is bringing together eight of fantasy’s finest artists to illustrate this novel.
Limited to 600 numbered copies, this first US edition will be published in March of 2001-each copy to be signed by the author and all the artists.

Michael William Kaluta (1947) was born on August 25 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
In 1973 Michael Kaluta starts collaborating with Denny O'Neil on The Shadow for DC Comics and in 1976 Kaluta joins Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Bernie Wrightson in forming The Studio.
Kaluta also co-plots a Shadow story that is published by Dark Horse Comics.

 Elaine Lee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She received a 1980 Daytime EMMY nomination for her role on NBC-TV’s The Doctors and was a founding member and artistic director of Manhattan-based theatre company, Wild Hair Productions.
As a comic writer, her best-known work is likely Starstruck, her collaboration with artist Mike Kaluta which has appeared in both stage play and comics incarnations.
A StarStruck spin-off by Lee and Kaluta, The Galactic Girl Guides, appeared in Dave Stevens' “Rocketeer Adventure Magazine”.

One of the acknowledged masters of comic book illustration, Mike Kaluta has proven himself a multi-talented graphic artist who has transcended the limitations of the work which first made him famous.
His less streamlined and more mechanized approach to the robot and his nods to pulp fiction motifs take the Art Deco world of "Metropolis" and show it at a new angle which must in turn have an influence on the design choices made for the Pentacle Theatre production of the musical.
Josaphat from the film is not a character in the musical, but other new characters appear, most notably, some of the workers are supporting roles as are a group of children.

The idea is to paint a large realistic "ink spill" on a piece of acetate, cut it out of the plastic sheet and place it on any given surface.
Wise guy Mike Nasser took the pencil drawing of Superman flying (See NEAL ADAMS TREASURY V2) and placed it in the overhead projector.

That first RiverCon guest list also included Kelly Freas, comics artists Dave Cockrum and Mike Kaluta, and one of only two convention appearances by the late fantasy novelist Thomas Burnett Swann.
The committee worked for the next two years putting the convention together, lining up guests and setting a contract with the hotel.
The convention was held in lieu of the 1979 RiverCon which resumed in 1980 with RiverCon V. The convention went very well with the exception of a few things which caused some hassles for the committee.

 Aquaman News
If you are a reader looking for a book to pick up, you look at Kaluta's covers and say, "wow, neat!" then move on to the next book in line, one that has a cover that makes you want to read the story inside.
Pin-up covers are fine for high-selling books, but for any book that's losing readers and close to cancellation, like Aquaman was when Kaluta took over as cover artist, you want something that will make the readers take a second look.
Something that will make them want the answer to the mystery that the cover sets up.

Comic books in general were quickly heading downhill in quality at this point, as publishers grasped at some way to increase sales and creators gave up, with many leaving the industry.
'The Shadow' lasted only twelve very uneven issues, with five issues drawn by the great fantasy illustrator Mike Kaluta and four issues drawn magnificently by Frank Robbins in some of his best work in a long career.
Issue number 3 (shown here) sports a rare painted cover by Mike Kaluta, with moody art inside by Mike Kaluta and Bernie Wrightson and story by Denny O'Neil.
