In addition to including core Lullaby members A.J. and Mike Mogis, Mayday also follows in Lullaby's diverse instrumental footsteps, sporting guitars, vibes, strings and banjo, along with a cast of guest vocalists.
But at the center of it all is Stevens and his unique style of songwriting that bends the limits of acoustic sound, taking traditional melodies and forcing them into experimental settings that are at once familiar and disquietingly dissonant, soothing and uncomfortable.
Stevens said while Mike Mogis is integral to the band's sound, his contribution comes with a price.

But tonight's show was in Witherspoon Hall, down in the bowels of Omaha's Joslyn Art Museum - a lovely theatre that stood in stark contrast to the cold, poor acoustics-ridden dives one would normally attend to see any of the 3 artists (well, 4 really, but more on that later) that graced the stage.
Stripped of much of the orchestral bombast that filled his most recent recordings, there really wasn't anything for Oberst to hide behind, and the nakedness of it all lent additional weight and depth to his shivering performance.
In some ways, Mogis was the true hero of the night's collaborations, fleshing out the performances of all 3 headliners while never claiming any of the spotlight.

The songs were kicked along by Jason Boesel on drums (from yet another Omaha band, Rilo Kiley) and topped by up to three light-fingered guitarists along with Mogis' country instruments and, for touches of stateliness, a trumpeter.

Unfettered by trends but unafraid of technology, Lullaby creates music with guitars, banjos, strings and the occasional horn section that, arrangement-wise, harkens back to Stephen Foster, but, in performance, has the impassioned immediacy of a great contemporary emo-core combo.
Two years later Mike’s older brother A.J. joined them on upright bass and pal Shane Aspergren on drums (and, occasionally, glockenspiel) and Lullaby became a bonafide band that hit the road to support their Bar/None debut Blanket Warm.
Critics in the U.S. and the U.K. were smitten by their sound and strained to describe exactly what it was.
