Muuss was one of the government's key witnesses in the case against Robert Morris, whose software "worm" in 1988 nearly brought down the Internet.
Muuss liked to keep a list of things he wanted to accomplish in life and had crossed off most of the items on it.
Muuss is survived by his wife, the former Susan Pohl of Edgewood; and a sister, Gretchen Frensemeier of Lutherville.

I-95 Accident claims life Churchville, Md - (AP) A double accident Monday night on Interstate 95 in Harford County killed a Havre de Grace man. State police say 42-year-old Michael Muuss died when his car hit a vehicle left partially in the road after the first crash.
Muuss' car then spun into the path of a tractor-trailer, which pushed him into a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder to help victims of the earlier crash.

Michael John Muuss (October 16, 1958 - November 20, 2000) was author of the (Software that is provided without charge) freeware network tool (A river in western Thailand; a major tributary of the Chao Phraya) Ping.
He wrote a number of software packages (including BRL-CAD) and network tools but the thousand-line (A river in western Thailand; a major tributary of the Chao Phraya) Ping, written in December 1983 while working at the Ballistics Research Lab, is the one he is remembered for.
Mike died in a car crash in Nov 2000.

Michael John Muuss (1958 - November 20, 2000)
A graduate of The Johns Hopkins University he was a senior scientist at the US Army Research Lab in Maryland when he died, specialising in geometric modelling, ray-tracing, MIMD architectures and digital networks.
The Usenix Association gave him a lifetime achievement award in 1993.

Because of the load it could impose on the network, it is unwise to use ping during normal operations or from automated scripts...
However, the modern Internet Ping command refers to a program was written by Mike Muuss in December, 1983, which has since become one of the most versatile and widely used diagnostic tools on the Internet.
Muuss named his program after the sonar sounds used for echo-location by submarines and bats; just like in old movies about submarines, sonar probes do sound something like a metallic "ping".

An early user of both Unix and TCP, Muuss graduated from The Johns Hopkins University (yay) in 1979 and went to work for the Ballistics Research Lab.
While at Johns Hopkins, Muuss was one of the students to run DEC's Resource Sharing Timesharing System under Unix, in late 1975.
Mike Muuss also obtained a copy of SEARCH, a multi-user war game, and modified it for use on the PDP-11/70 at BRL.

Among other things, Mike Muuss was the author of "ping."
In early 1980, Muuss extended the protocols to deal with heterogeneity and led a team to port the University of Illinois NCP capability to PDP-11 Unix.
In 1983, he was also involved in the debugging of the 4.1cBSD TCP/IP implementation that was one of the primary factors in the great protocol changeover (from NCP to TCP/IP) on the ARPANET.

 I Miss You Mike
All of the pictures I took at Mike's funeral are available to look at.
When I lost my job in the early '90s Mike was there for me. With in the day he had put me in contact with the person that would later hire me.
I know there is a simple answer and with a few minutes of discussion with Mike he would have the answer for me or he would have verified my answer.
