Mike's relationship with the bots was very different from the one the bots had with Joel.
Mike tended to be more aggressive regarding his captivity and making fun of the films, and was forever scheming to escape the Satellite or at least make the Mads look like fools, though he and the bots did share moments of friendly recognition with later villains Pearl Forrester, Professor Bobo and Observer.

Mike is in top form through-out (though he does draw more laughs during the first half of the movie) as he deftly takes these defects to task.
Nelson was a comedy juggernaut and though it would be too much to expect him to keep up this pace throughout.
Mike's work is more topical here than what he did with MST3K -He references Sumner Redstone and takes a deliciously wicked jab at Mel Gibson- which might date the effort in later years.

MST3K uses many people to make jokes drawing from a wider range of culture of art ranging from the roots of English literature or medieval history to last year’s movies or jokes about the physiques of the actors.
Anyway, Mike Nelson is a big reason for MST3K’s success, serving as head writer of the series for its entire cable run and as the host / human face of the show for the last 4 1/2 seasons.
Nelson’s self-deprecatory humor, something I had blamed on his co-writers during MST3K’s run, often gets in his way, although some of those jokes are pretty funny as well.

Nelson's connection to the 1989 film, in which Patrick Swayze plays a philosophizing bouncer in a rough bar, goes back to when he and friends saw it during a mission to find the worst film in theaters.
Mike and Kevin are a really good team and I hope they keep them doing the tracks together.

I must conclude that, if Nelson is not the funniest man alive, he is at least a viable contender for the title.
Nelson keeps the plot moving so quickly that none of its quirks seem self-consciously quirky – even the most bizarre characters seem real.

Rifftrax syncs up with a user-provided DVD, to create a riff style soundtrack that is reminiscent of MST3K.

Mike Nelson (the second guy; not Joel) provides MP3s for download which you then synchronize with your DVD (or other format) of the movie you want, ah, annotated, and Mike's MST3K-style commentary plays alongside.
It's only $2 now since it's in "beta", although it's not clear exactly what being in non-beta would provide.
The test clips aren't quite as funny as MST3K, but on the other hand, he's not restricted by being able to afford to air given movies, so he does have commentary for recent turkeys like Roadhouse.
