Mike Ness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mike Ness (born Michael James Ness) (born April 3, 1962) is a guitarist, vocalist, and chief song writer for the punk rock band Social Distortion.
Ness was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts and raised in Orange County, California.
This is the first time Ness collaborated with another songwriter since 1990's self-titled album, on which he and then bassist John Maurer wrote 'Let it be Me'.

Mike Ness fronted the Fullerton, California troop Social Distortion, and it was his voice that tied everything so messily together for me. After the initial release of energy on Mommy's Little Monster, something stranger began happening.
Ness perhaps, I fantasized, had a similar experience with his folks music, but he was the one with the balls to flaunt it.
Ness has a group of musicians who are enormously adept at bringing the songs to new life, and Ness gravel-growls his way through to near perfection.

Mike Ness was ahead of most in declaring punk to be a kind of postmodern folk idiom, and among all who've made that claim, he's by far the finest example of it in action.
Ness has never been one for subtlety, and in case you didn't catch the significance of this album, there's a Dylan cover -- the first single, "Don't Think Twice (It's All Right)" -- and a guest appearance by Bruce Springsteen within the first three songs.
Ness is the sort of guy who pulled a pseudo-Robert-Mitchum-in-Night-of-the-Hunter and tattoo'd the words "Love" and "Pain" on his knuckles -- indicative of his story, which has always been about the paths less traveled of men who play games they know they were born to lose.

 Mike Ness - Rockabilly Central
As singer and guitarist for Social D, Ness has always been openly reverent of folk and blues music, drawing as much inspiration from such artists as Johnny Cash and Hank Williams as he has from the Clash or the Sex Pistols.
Ness: Well, the neat thing about this record is that we intended to have guests come in and help make it even more special right from the start.
Ness: Social D may never be the kind of group that sells 5 million records or anything like that, but the fact that we've always been just beneath the surface of commercial success has actually helped drive us to go on.

Concert Review -- Mike Ness   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
The change is one from a band that delivers an intense experience with an explosive blast of sound or sings regretfully of a life of hard luck to one that occasionally comes close to plodding along without any real direction.
Even with a set that had the feel of a showcase -- introduce the song, play the song, repeat -- Ness, accompanied by his band (4 guys : guitar, drums, standup bass, steel guitar), proved once again that he is a capable songwriter and musician.
A lack of chemistry between band members (heck, Ness even entered and left the stage through a separate entrance!) was obvious, although it didn't mar the concert beyond keeping any on-stage intimacy at bay.

So Mike Ness can be forgiven for sounding a little out of it calling from his hotel room in San Francisco, especially considering he played just last night.
Ness traces his passion for the country and early rock nuggets that make up the bulk of Under the Influences to a period in the mid-Eighties when he found himself disenchanted with the California punk rock scene that counted Social D as one of its own.
But by and large, Ness describes his Social Distortion material as more consciously in the mold of "a teen anthem kind of thing," while his recent solo excursions have allowed him to be a "little more dimensional." And to his intense gratification, his fans seem to be catching on to the distinction.

Mike Ness : Under the Influences - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
As lead singer and songwriter of punk mainstays Social Distortion for the past 21 years, Mike Ness always possessed an innate understanding of the connection between punk and country.
With his second solo album release of 1999 (the first is an album of rockabilly influenced originals, Cheating at Solitaire), Under the Influences showcases Ness' love of roots music with a collection of tunes originally written by legends such as Hank Williams Sr., Marty Robbins, and Carl Perkins.
But covers are all about interpretation, and what Ness lacks in vocal finesse he makes up for with feeling.

Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness is back at it again, showing fans his other side, primitive rock 'n' roll and tender ballads, a style which has influenced him throughout his twenty year career.
A rock-a-billy stomp cruises over a country pulse as Ness rocks it up with his trademark punk rock voice and knack for creating slick rock with a gentle and hard side.
Of course, Ness takes that kick and turns it into a lethal 1-2 combo, knocking out anyone in the way with a ferocious rhythm, slippery guitars, and an undeniable pulse running through Ness' classic, distinct tough guy voice.

Formed in Fullerton, CA in 1979, when Ness was still a teenager, Social Distortion has survived drug problems, tragedies, and a changing musical climate.
The music they're making today, 25 years after their inception, is every bit as classic as the angst-filled, blues-inspired, simple punk songs they wrote in the beginning of their career.

It is occasionally more interesting to watch a singer who not only is unable to hit all his notes but isn't even sure which ones he will hit than it is to watch a singer whose talent is solidly grounded.
Such was the case with Ness as he toggled between the clenched-teeth growl he's become adept at with Social Distortion and the cleaner, naked voice that dominates Solitaire.
The latter, as on Hank Williams's "You Win Again" and his own "Ballad of a Lonely Man," required Ness to dig deeper in his chest, unclench his molars, and pray for the best.

In one sense, it seems a little strange that Mike Ness would choose to record a solo album since he always appeared to be the driving force behind Social Distortion.
On the other hand, Social Distortion is a full-fledged rock band, which means they're a democracy -- and that might have gotten a little constricting after nearly 20 years in the same outfit.

While on tour in support of his first solo effort, Cheating At Solitaire, Ness introduced some of these old tunes into his set list thus inspiring him to do the album.
