Pattenden was commissioned to "establish a different perspective of the Band"--to tell us more than what we already knew, that they came from Hull, they were partial to a drink or two, and they wrote funny, ironic pop songs (songwriters Dave Rotheray and Paul Heaton were particularly irked by that "ironic" label).
Mike Pattenden, of "The Times", "Vox" and "Arena", has been granted access behind the scenes to the band themselves and their associates, both past and present, in order to tell the story of the last decade.
Mike Pattenden, as the author and a supposed long term freind of Heaton, gives him an easy ride on subjects like his well-known and rather eccentric political philosophy.

Listen to Musak | Last Orders at the Liars' Bar
Mike Pattenden's Last Orders at the Liars' Bar (The Official Story of The Beautiful South) is much more the biography of Paul Heaton than the title (although perhaps not the cover picture) suggests.
Last Orders charts the rise and break-up of the former and the enduring presence of later on the album charts - all the way to the release of their seventh album, Quench.
Pattenden does seem to get underneath the band and the talent that brought the world Perfect Ten, Rotterdam and Song For Whoever.

In fact it's a one-off set of original compositions for Mike Alway's Richmond label.
The material follows the Tender Pervert's usual blueprint of Weillesque bar-room barrel organ wheezes, centred around dubious sexual behaviour, gender deceit, lust and jealousy.

Sega Roms Information: Sonic The Hedgehog
Stay Sonic, a book about the character written by Mike Pattenden and published only in the UK, provided an alternative explanation, which later became the basic origin for all subsequent UK publications.
Sonic is something of a nomad; he travels from area to area of the Earth searching for new things to see and do, rarely stopping for anything or anyone unless he's needed, often times getting himself involved in Eggman's schemes to take over the world.
The origin of Sonic's blue colouration and super speed was first featured in a promotional comic strip in the US Disney Adventures comic and later described in more detail in Mike Pattenden's Stay Sonic book.
