Mike Quill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael J. Quill (1905–1966) was one of the founders of the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU), a union founded by subway workers in New York City that expanded to represent employees in other forms of transit, and the President of the TWU for most of the first thirty years of its existence.
Quill attributed his bad hip variously to a bullet lodged there after he was shot by the Black and Tans or to an accident in which he "fell off a mountainside"; he also admitted to others that the condition had dated from his childhood.
Quill was also prone to exploiting his Irish background, particularly when in front of the heavily Irish-American membership of the TWU; as more than one observer noted his brogue got thicker the longer he was away from Ireland and particularly when he was on stage or in front of a microphone.

Born in the village of Gortloughera in Kilgarvan, County Kerry, in 1905, Mike Quill was nurtured by the Irish revolt against British occupation.
Reflecting on those years, Mike Quill once recalled, "we were no experts in the field of labor organization, but we had something in common with our fellow workers -- we were all poor -- we were all overworked -- we were all victims of the 84 hour week.

Mike Quill was a Kerryman who was never afraid to court unpopularity by fearlessly tackling any anti-Semitism encountered among his fellow-Irishmen.
In 1961, when Quill received a letter allegedly written by twenty-five TWU airline workers in Tennessee protesting against the union’s support for the civil rights desegregation campaign, his immediate response was to invite the civil rights leader Martin Luther King to address that year’s union convention.

MATTHEW GUINAN, who with founding President Michael J. Quill, played a pivotal role in the development and rapid expansion of TWU from its roots in the New York City bus and subway system to a major national labor organization representing thousands of workers in all the transport industries, was the union's second International President.
Guinan's greatest challenge did not come until early 1966 when after the bitter New York City transit strike, President Mike Quill, the driving force behind the union since its founding in 1934 and a revered, idolized figure among the membership, died at age 60 and Mr.
Father Kelly, who also counted Mike Quill among his friends, brought a smile to everyone's face when he said that "Mattie is on his way to heaven to meet Mike Quill and God, in that order."

As a youth, Michael J. Quill fought the feared British Black and Tans in his native Ireland until he was forced to flee to America.
His job was to pursue grievances, and he brought such zeal to the job that he quickly ran afoul of transit officials who responded with the same kind of overkill that had gotten them in trouble in the past.
Eddie Creighton, whose father worked before him in transit, quickly chimed in: "Mike Quill ran this union when he was fired," said Creighton, as heads nodded in recognition at the name.

Quill was the now-legendary transit union leader who staged his own dramatic defiance of a judge's back-to-work order in the union's 1966 subway strike, suggesting in his native Kerry brogue that the judge could "drop dead in his fl robes."
Others who took the stage were Brian McLaughlin of the city's Central Labor Council who said his member unions had pledged a million-dollar fund to help the TWU should it have to shoulder strike penalties.
The transit workers were one of the few unions to endorse Democrat Freddy Ferrer in the mayoral race this fall and the significance of their alienation from Mike Bloomberg's City Hall was lost on no one.
