Mike Watt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael David Watt (born December 20, 1957 in Portsmouth, Virginia) is a bass guitarist, singer and songwriter, best-known for co-founding the punk rock bands The Minutemen and fIREHOSE; as of 2003, he is also the bassist for the reunited Iggy Pop and The Stooges.
Watt's third solo album The Secondman's Middle Stand, inspired by both his 2000 illness and one of his favorite books, Dante's The Divine Comedy, was released in 2004; one reviewer writes that the album is a "harrowing, funny, and genuinely moving stuff from a true American original." [1].
Watt feared that he would have to temporairily shelve the bass in July 2005 when a crack was discovered in its headstock during a 2005 Stooges European tour; fortunately, he was able to have the instrument repaired in time for the next leg of the tour.

This CD is a loose autobiography that ranges from his lineage, with tales of his father's growth to manhood, to his days with Boon discovering punk rock and then wallowing in it as they created some of the best modern music made in the USA.
In his liner notes, Watt says the CD is "one whole piece that celebrates three people playing together." Indeed, few rock trios since the Minutemen (and before that the Jimi Hendrix Experience) have vibed so eloquently.

A note is struck, and a post-metaphysical flannel woven from a trillion crisscrossing threads is flown, its most prominent stripes including: the momentum and confidence of Watt’s former Minuteman guitarist and ever-present soulmate, the late D. Boon; the moral oblation and spiritual flame of John Coltrane; the stream of consciousness of Joyce; Dante’s pilgrim pull.
Even Watt’s stage setup is testament to the bass’s political nature, positioning he and his fellow players in way Watt has likened to a garage or an engine room, where gig-goers come to peek in and experience this conversation between compatriots.
Watt is a musician first and monetary creature last; not one to hoard, nor starve, just an artist awakened to two different livelihoods: one that keeps him physically alive, thru food, shelter, funds; and the other, Right Livelihood, that keeps him alive to the ALL, thru daemon, station, vocation, and post.

Watt attributes many of these changes to his recent stint as the tour bassist with Porno For Pyros: "Being a sidemouse, having to do what they told me -- I mean they had me wearin' pajamas onstage and shit -- really helped me be a better leader.

Watt dedicated this reunion to the late Minutemen guitarist D. Boon, whose parts were replaced, in memoriam, by nothing.
Still, as Watt took pains to explain, Boon's parts remain so fundamental to the songs that their presence was implicit "Much respect to D. Boon," he said, on several occasions, before reaching back into the Minutemen's incomparable catalog of hardcore/post-punk and playing with the kind of intensity that makes live rock shows worth seeing.
Watt and Hurley played rhythm, of course, but so did Boon—which, in turn, let melody sneak back in everywhere, in the bass, in the drums.

A blue-collar hero in an art-school world, bassist and working-joe conceptualist Mike Watt has been a titanic presence on the avant-rock scene since the dawn of the '80s — when he, guitarist D Boon and drummer George Hurley formed the Minutemen.
That spectacularly prolific (a dozen records in just five years) band's heady mélange of skittery avant-garde rhythms, burly guitar assays and agit- prop sloganeering was as revelatory a development as any in punk rock's two-decade history.
To Watt's credit, he never lets things degenerate into the sort of jam-session indolence so common to cronies-in-the-studio packages: even the faithful cover of Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" (a chance for J Mascis to pump up the volume) maintains a clear sense of purpose.
