Kalinin was a candidate member of the Politburo from 1919 until 1925 when he became a full member.
During the Great Purge, many wrote letters to Kalinin with petitions to reconsider the fates of the convicts, and indeed, Kalinin's intervention often helped, thus giving him the reputation of "kind grandfather Kalinin" (recall that Stalin was "dear father" to all Soviet people then).
Kalinin was buried in the Kremlin Wall necropolis.

Kalinin was a member of the St. Petersburg-based "Union for Struggle of the Liberation of the Working Class" and a founder of the RDSRP.
In 1919, he replaced Iakov Sverdlov and Chairman of the All-Russian Executive Committee of the Communist Party, and during the Civil War organised the "October Revolution Agitation Train," whose task was to recruit peasants and workers to the Reds.
From 1925 until his death in 1946 (from natural causes), Kalinin was a member of the Politburo and occupied numerous party posts.

On March 5, 1940, members of Soviet politburo, including Kalinin, signed an order of execution (prepared by Lavrenty Beria) of 25,700 Polish intelligentsia, including 14,700 Polish prisoners of war.
These killings were later known as the Katyn massacre.

The party's Central Committee elected Kalinin candidate member of the Politburo (March 25, 1919 - Dec. 18, 1925) and full member (Nov. 29, 1919 - March 29, 1920) of the Orgburo in 1919, but he was not re-elected to this body after the 9th party congress.
Accession of Kalinin to the top leadership of the Communist party was made complete, when he was elected full member (Jan. 1, 1926 - June 3, 1946) of the Politburo after the 14th party congress.
