Mikhail Alexeyevich Lavrentyev (Михаи́л Алексе́евич Лавре́нтьев) (November 19, 1900 October 15, 1980) was a Russian physicist and mathematician.
As a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Lavrentyev undertook the idea of establishing a new science center in the eastern Russia, which resulted in erecting a "science town" Akademgorodok in the vicinity of Novosibirsk.

The first prizes in honour of academic Mikhail Lavrentyev, founder of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (based near Novosibirsk in western Siberia), were awarded to Russian scientists on Monday.
Academic Georgy Marchuk received the award for "outstanding results with paramount significance for the development of science and education." Nikolai Dobretsov, chairman of the Siberian branch and chairman of the honorary council of the M.A. Lavrentyev Foundation, received an award from his fellow academics.
The prize foundation was established in 2000 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the leading academic, specialist in mathematics and mechanics, and scientific and public figure.

A group of prominent scientists (Lavrentyev, S.L.Sobolev, S.A.Khristianovich and others) played a decisive role in attracting gifted researchers from the country's western regions to the development of Siberian science.
Lavrentyev was very enthusiastic about the new center of Science.

The town, whose name would translate to English as Academic Town, was founded in the 1950s by the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Academician Mikhail Alexeyevich Lavrentyev, a prominent physicist and mathematician, the first Chairman of the Siberian Division of the USSR Academy of Science, played a prominent role at establishing Akademgorodok.
At its peak, Akademgorodok was home of 65,000 scientists and their families, and was a privileged area to live in, with well-stocked stores and dachas.
