 Literary Encyclopedia: Mikhail Lomonosov
Lomonosov did receive a certain level of education in Kholmogory, certainly enough to awaken in him a desire for learning, which he furthered by passing himself off as the son of a priest in order to get himself enrolled into the Slavo-Graeco-Latin Academy in Moscow.
Far from temperate by nature, Lomonosov resented the overwhelming influence of non-Russians at the Academy, towards whom he could frequently be drunkenly abusive, culminating in a lengthy period of house arrest in 1743-44.
Lomonosov was passionately concerned that Russia establish for itself a native scientific tradition – hence his resentment of foreigners at the Academy – and to this end he played a major role in the foundation in 1755 of the university in Moscow that still bears his name.
