Milagiriya is the ‘Sinhalised’ name for the Portuguese word Milagres, meaning miracles, after which the area too was named.
The name Milagres or Miracles refers to a well adjacent to the Portuguese Catholic church that was reputed to have miraculous properties, such that the sick were brought to receive healing from its waters.
Paul’s Milagiriya was originally part of the parish of St. Michael’s and All Angels at Polwatte, Kollupitiya, which The Mornng Leader featured on October 12, 2005.

Rev.Canon Ivan Corea was Vicar of St.Paul's Church in Milagiriya in Colombo.
In 1656, after the capitulation to the Dutch, the Milagiriya church gave way to a Sinhala school where instruction was made available in the religion of the Reformists.
It is good to mention that St. Paul's Church, Milagiriya maintained a high-water-mark standard in its daily and weekly services, including the care and concern for young people and those who were elderly or sick and in need of special ministrations, together with the indigent.

Paul’s Balika Vidyalaya, Milagiriya which was inaugurated on January 14, 1889 as a Parish School affiliated to the Church of England celebrated its 120th anniversary recently.
The word is derived from ‘milegro’ miracle, which later come to be known as Milagiriya.
By the time the school reached its 50th year in 1937, the number on the staff had risen to 15 with 225 students.

Those were trying times for St Thomas' and Headmasters Manickasinaham at Milagiriya and Barnabas at Mt. Lavinia strove to maintain traditions and standards in a College, in bits and pieces literally.
I remember Ranjan Wijeratne with me at Milagiriya, but I cannot recollect his coming back to Mount in 1947 because he wound up his College career at Gurutulawa.
Outstanding among my classmates at this time were H R Wickremasinghe, now a Doctor, Arthur Sinnetamby who also passed out as a Doctor, as did S F Wickremesinghe, and Winston Peiris from Kegalle who took to the Law, and later became a District Judge.

Rasiah, an employee in a restaurant in Wellawatte is the grandfather of two and half year old Jegatheswaran Asvini who was brutally killed in Tuesday's LTTE bomb explosion in Milagiriya targeting ex-EPDP Parliamentarian S. Sivadasan.
Little Asvini was proudly waddling her way home in her new shoes with her mother when the bomb went off near St. Pauls College, Milagiriya killing her and two others.
Her tragic death has proved for the umpteenth time that terrorists have no regard for the age or race of their victims.
