Milam County is in east central Texas 150 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered by Robertson, Burleson, Lee, Williamson, Bell, and Falls counties.
It was during the first Congress of the Republic of Texas that the municipality came to be called Milam County.
By the time of the Texas Revolution, the only settlements in present-day Milam County were the very thinly populated community of Nashville-on-the-Brazos at the eastern edge of the county and a few families scattered along the upper Brazos and the Little River.

By 1818, Milam was trading with Comanche Indians on the upper Colorado River in Texas.
