All About Beer Feature: Vanishing Mild
Brown malt and brown beer remained a vital element in porter brewing, and it was from the success of porter that a new type of brown beer—mild ale—emerged.
Such is the decline of mild ale today that the name is synonymous with "weak." It was not the case in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Mild ale became victim to the inexorable rise of pale ale and the creation of giant national brewers who could not be bothered with small volume brands.

Milds were designed to be consumed in large amounts without knocking the drinker out; the beer was popular amongst the working class, particularly amongst those who worked in strenuous jobs.
Smoked beers were standard as most malt (called brown malt) was malted over wood fires rather that the coal fires that were starting to be used for the new style of brewing malt called pale malt.
Milds were the most popular beer in Britain until the economic boom of the Fifties when the beer was shunned because of its working class image.

Mild ale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mild Ale is one of the oldest styles of beer from England, and originally meant a young or immature ale.
Due to expanding population and demand for beer in the 18th century, some brewers began to sell beer before it was ready, at a lower cost than fully matured ales which could require cellaring in the bottle for up to a year.
Milds are still popular in the West Midlands, Wales and Northwest England, but are less popular than bitter in the rest of the world.

Beers around the 18th and 19th centuries had a sour taste as a result of the primative brewing methods at the time, the mild style of beer was called just that because of it's lack of sourness.
This was a strong beer in those days but It's strength has decreased over time; during the early 19th century a typical mild would have an ABV of around 8% and in the early 20th century around 5%, finally settling around 3.4% at this present time.
Mild was cheap, slightly sweet and very strong at around 8% ABV, but the first world war and barley rationing led to a fall in alcohol strength.

BBC - Nottingham Features - The Nottinghamshire Mild trail
Mild is one of the oldest beer styles in the world – originating from the middle ages
In the mid-19th century, both ‘ales’ and ‘beers’ were popular with drinkers; the prime difference between them was that ales (pale ales and Milds) were not vatted i.e.
There was also a definite recipe distinction in the early days between ale and beer – basically, ales didn’t contain hops, the ingredient that give beers that ‘bitter taste’, although nowadays most of them do of course, along too with dark malts in the case of the Milds we drink today.
