In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

BBC NEWS | England | Mystery of missing treasure
For more than 50 years scholars have speculated as to whether the treasure was really discovered in a field in Suffolk, as was claimed, or whether it was moved to the site from Italy or Africa.
Now a 94-year-old from Mildenhall, who helped clean the items soon after they were discovered, has said that one of the items in the treasure is missing.
One suggests that the Mildenhall Treasure was smuggled in to the UK by United States servicemen returning from Italy or Africa.

Whether the existence of a "treasure house of gold" remains entirely true or not, it still is a very interesting and educational read.
The folk wisdom in Lunenburg County is that there is a pirate's treasure trove buried on the island, probably Captain Kidd's (as evidenced by the proliferation of that particular buccaneer's name in restaurant and gift-shop titles).
Oddly, he does not repeat the local legend that the treasure will not be found until 10 lives (I think that's the number) have been claimed, or until all the oak trees on the island are cut down.
