In a career-defining performance, Cobb portrays the suffering Willy Loman--the middle-aged man at the end of his emotional rope--with Dunnock equally impressive as his patient wife, Linda.
This one moment is so telling: Willy, who never achieved success, either for himself or for his sons, is envious of Bernard's success (and Bernard was never even "well-liked"), symbolized by the silver cigarette case.
Mildred Dunnock is likewise ideal as Linda: fragile, but hard as steel when defending Willy to her two resentful sons, Biff and Happy (George Segal and the excellent James Farentino).

Prime Time Specials Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Mildred Dunnock earned ever lasting fame in the theater through her role as Linda Loman opposite Lee J. Cobb’s Willy Loman in the original 1949 Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” She went on to reprise the role in a 1951 film version, and on television in 1966.
Of her lesser known but equally strong performances, Dunnock appeared in a television production of “The Power and the Glory,” (1961), and in the film version of the Tennessee Williams play “Sweet Bird of Youth,” (1962).
Having concentrated her efforts primarily in the theater, Dunnock’s film credits are minimal.

Since this version was produced for television, the play was abridged to accommodate a two-hour running time, with commercials; the material suffers, and lacks some of the cumulative power it retains on stage.
Especially hard hit by the cuts is Mildred Dunnock, who plays Linda—besides appearing in the original production, she was in the March film version.
She has some moving moments, but Linda isn't really at the center of the drama, and though Dunnock is good, her performance points up the fact that Miller always had trouble writing convincingly for women.

All the performances are masterful, amusing and archtypal in the Williams manner: Karl Malden's yokel, Baker's hothouse virgin, Mildred Dunnock's vague octogenarian (especially hilarious) and Wallach's wily Sicilian all score strongly, though the latter lacks the physical size and power to be a believably threatening stud.
This was Baker's first major role, following her film debut in 1953's EASY TO LOVE, and despite all the moral outrage, she deservedly received an Oscar nomination (she lost to Ingrid Bergman for ANASTASIA), as did the script, Dunnock, and Kaufman's starkly handsome fl-and-white photography.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Catholic Legion of Decency broadly condemned the film, stating that it "dwells upon carnal suggestiveness."
