The second UK aircraft, WB550, was tested at Boscombe Down with an enlarged rudder in April 1950 at about the time of the first spinning accident, which resulted in the death of the son of a Member of Parliament.
The last aircraft were retired from the RAF's air-experience flights in 1996, although two Chipmunks remain in the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for converting fast jet pilots to the Spitfires and Hurricanes.

 FlightDeck Milestones: Avro Arrow
Before giving the green light to Avro, the RCAF sent a top level evaluation team to assess all the countries in the Western alliance to find out if anyone was working on a craft that met their requirements.
The Arrow was to be a twin-engined aircraft with a crew of two, a supersonic interceptor to destroy any enemy threat in the next decade or beyond, and was expected to fulfill a grueling performance specification issued by the RCAF in 1953.
This daunting list of requirements, which can scarcely be exceeded by combat aircraft today, was the reason the Arrow was to be powered by enormous engines especially designed for it, and had to stow all missiles inside for maximum drag reduction.

Instrument that measures the speed of an aircraft relative to the surrounding air, using the differential between the pressure of still air (static pressure) and that of moving air compressed by the craft's forward motion (ram pressure); as speed increases, the difference between these pressures increases as well.
An (uncorrected) indicated airspeed is still used to estimate an aircraft's tendency to stall.
