 Miles Martinet
The Miles Martinet (M.25) was a target-tow aircraft of the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm that was in service during World War II.
The first prototype of the Martinet was flown on April 24, 1942.
In total 1,724 Martinets were produced for the RAF and FAA to meet Air Ministry Specification 12/41.

Miles Aircraft Ltd. was a relatively short-lived independent company that existed around, and just after World War 2, before it was swallowed up in the consolidation that occurred in the British aircraft industry post 1946.
Miles' most famous aircraft were the Master and Magister trainers for the RAF, and the target tugs, Martinet and Monitor.
The Martinet was a two-seat aircraft of wooden construction with fabric surfaces, and was powered by an 870-hp Bristol Mercury radial piston engine, with a top speed of about 240 mph, and a cruising speed of some 200 mph.

The Martinet is on its only legs for the first time since July 1951.
The first picture shows the tailplane structure we are working on in the workshop, the other is the ply covering to the top of the fuselage which is being formed to shape over the fuselage.
On April 26th 1997 we took delivery of some parts of a Miles Master that were brought down from Yorkshire.

While Miles had sufficient transport vessels for moving his troops to Puerto Rico, he was concerned about not having enough armored battleships to protect the troop transports in the event of an attack by Spanish torpedo boats, which had already sallied out of San Juan to attack American warships twice before.
Miles was under orders to return to the United States after the surrender of the Spanish in Cuba, and possibly he feared that he would not be permitted to lead the invasion.

 Miles M.25 Martinet - target tug
The Miles M.25 prototype (LR241) was flown for the first time on 24 April 1942, the aircraft being based on the Miles Master Mk II but with a lengthened nose to compensate for the weight of target-towing equipment.
THe type entered service as the Miles Martinet and between 1942 and 1945 a total of 1,724 was built; the type was complemented in 1946 by the M.50 Queen Martinet which had been developed to Specification Q.10/43.
This was a radio-controlled pilotless target version of the Martinet, 11 being built as new and the remaining 54 being conversions of M.25s.
