After his departure, there were rumours of Ratledge setting up his own studio, which he did, but the projected solo album never materialized.
Mainly the work of Jenkins (Ratledge is only credited with arranging the programmed percussion...), it was an unexpected return to the spotlight for him, although the music had little in common with his, and even Jenkins', old work.
Ratledge was absent from the London concert of autumn '96 and is reportedly working on non-musical projects, including a CD-Rom on arts and screenplays for television.

Napalm Death is a grindcore/death metal band formed at Solihull School near Birmingham, England in 1982 by Miles Ratledge and Nicholas Bullen, originally under the name of Civil Defence.
They are credited by many with having invented the grindcore genre though the band quit this style after their first two albums and became a death metal band.
After recording the demo, Ratledge got out and Mick Harris, who was a local fan, was admitted into the band.

Even though Mick Harris is on the cover Miles Ratledge was the one who played drums on this.

And while they are clearly two very different beasts, one of the things that does link Miles and the Softs together is their uncannily rapid evolution, combined with live performances that, while based around a somewhat consistent set list, demonstrate a loose improvisational sensibility that few could match.
But while Soft Machine may have been working from a fairly constant set of material, the order of the material and the length of the pieces--which are strung together into continuous sets without breaks--would vary from night to night and, consequently draw inevitable comparison to Miles, who was similarly unstructured in performance.
This isn't to say that there are a lot of stylistic links between Miles and Soft Machine.

I was born in Charleston, SC, graduated from St. Andrews Parish High School (1972), and the College of Charleston with a BS/CS (Computer Science).
I now reside at Buck Hall Landing on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway between the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and the Francis Marion National Forest in McClellanville - about 30 miles up the coast (half-way to Georgetown, on the way to Myrtle Beach).
I am also the same Mike Ratledge that held 11 separate world-record scores simultaneously on Atari 2600 games during the early 1980's.
