  Whitney Willard Straight - WOI Encyclopedia Italia
Born in New York, Whitney Straight was the son of Willard Dickerman Straight and heiress Dorothy Payne Whitney.
Straight was seriously wounded in Norway in 1940 while laying out an aerodrome on the frozen surface of a lake, and after convalescing he rejoined his suadron towards the end of the Battle of Britain.
Whitney Straight died in Fulham in 1979 at the age of sixty-six.

About a mile after I left them, I came to Trailside Meadow, so I laid down for a few minutes to rest, hoping they would catch up.
The last half mile or so, it was very difficult to keep track of the trail, so we ended up boulder-hopping most of the last part of the journey.

Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, rises like the phoenix from the western rim of the Great Basin Desert of California.
Located within the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of Sequoia National Park, Mt. Whitney is situated on the east side of the Great Western Divide, a chain of mountains that runs north/south through the center of the park, and is therefore not visible from any of the roads to the west.
Whitney is the most frequently climbed peak in the Sierra Nevadas, and perhaps the entire U.S. The summit can be most directly reached via a 10.7-mile trail from Whitney Portal, 13 miles west of of Lone Pine.

We followed what we thought was the trail from Outpost Camp, until it became apparent that it was just a use trail leading to a dead-end at a lively water cascade.
sunrise and Whitney Group were relfected nicely in a little lake, and a number of folks stopped to take pics, myself included.
Barry and Suzy were at the summit when we got there, the other folks having already been there and started their descent via the Mountaineer's Route (maybe next year!).

By mile 17, my feet began to hurt in earnest, and the last five miles of the trip were an interesting mental exercise in pain endurance.
The next morning, the memory of the pain had already begun to fade and the whole experience began to take on the aspect of "fun," even though I know for certain that I didn't actually have any fun while I was on the trail.

Miles' most famous aircraft were the Master and Magister trainers for the RAF, and the target tugs, Martinet and Monitor.
The Miles M.25 Martinet arose from a response to Air Ministry specification 12/41, and the first prototype flew in 1942.

It was on that mountain that Dar swore off her attempt at Mt. Whitney when the altitude got the best of her and caused severe nausea and vomiting.
Unless you missed geography class you probably know that Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the contiguous United States (that means the lower 48 states) at 14,497 feet.
It was quite an accomplishment for someone in her fifties who had never hiked in an alpine environment before, she had trekked about 8 miles when she turned back making for a 16 mile roundtrip hike.

 Nevada - Whitney Pockets, Lake Mead
There are many prominent outcrops of deep red eroded sandstone in the hills and desert surrounding Lake Mead, including various places either side of SSR 167, the Northshore Road, and quite extensive formations in the Valley of Fire State Park.
The pockets are a further 15 miles along the road, which soon turns away from the Virgin Valley and crosses rolling, arid hills with little vegetation, still paved though rather rough in parts; not much maintained.
Left is a rougher road through the foothills of the Virgin Mountains then on to Mesquite, right is towards the Lake Mead NRA while straight ahead are the Whitney Pockets, rising quite abruptly from the sandy desert, here dotted by Joshua trees as well as various types of cacti.

There is a stocked pond full of trout where lucky anglers can catch their meal for the day and various streams bleed out of the surrounding mountainside, filling the pond and the main stream at the valley floor.
While over-looking these miles and miles of rugged, back-country beauty I envied the birds for their wings.
Everything you read about Mt. Whitney warns about the afternoon showers and I think the people who were unprepared were really hoping for the best conditions during their hike and were thinking they would never get caught in a storm.

On Thursday we walked up the Whitney trail for 2 1/2 miles switch-backing across a steep slope up to Lone Pine Lake, which is as far as you can go without a trail pass.
The lake is an incredible blue-green and is bounded by a pine grove on one side and a glacial moraine line on the other acting as a dam wall.
Mostly the views to the right (looking back to the start of the trail) are blocked by big triangular ridges of rock, but you pass by a couple of "windows" along the way, which allow you to look down both sides at once.
