Berea College - SENS - Average Person-miles per Gallon for Motorpool Vans & Cars
The August fleet average was 60 person-miles per gallon for the fleet [1].
The performance goal is based on the average fuel efficiency of the motorpool’s new Prius (50 miles per gallon) and the assumption of three occupants per trip.
In order to calculate gallons purchased off-campus, the AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report website provided the average price per gallon for gas by month, which was divided by the total cost These totals were then divided by the total number of person-miles.

So assuming 1/3 of a baggage car per train is like assuming that the typical passenger train that had baggage cars, used half of one baggage car to transport the luggage of the passengers.
Using the same methodology one can estimate the passenger-miles per gallon for steam engine trains powered by coal (and fuel oil) by using the fact that the heat value of one gallon of gasoline is about the same as the heat value of 9.5 pounds of coal (per US Bureau of Mines, 1950).

WorldChanging: Another World Is Here: 500 Miles Per Gallon?
Fareed Zakaria's Newsweek column "Imagine: 500 Miles Per Gallon," in which he argues that a combination of flex-fuel and plug-in hybrid vehicle technologies could significantly reduce our dependence on petroleum, is getting quite a bit of attention in the sustainasphere (see, for example, here and here).
"500 miles per gallon," it turns out, refers not to the fuel consumption of these green cars, but to their relative consumption of oil.
As long as you mentally add that "of gasoline" every time he tosses out the "500 miles per gallon" figure, it's a decent article.

HOW TO GET MORE MILES PER GALLON
Underinflated tires are a major cause of poor fuel economy, costing you up to one mile per gallon.
Watch your speed When traveling at a steady speed, most cars get their best gas mileage somewhere between 35 and 45 miles per hour depending on the car's engine and transmission.
Divide the number of miles you drove since your last fill-up by the number of gallons you put in.

A liter is 33.814 ounces, and a gallon is 128 ounces, so 12 liters = 12 * 33.814 ounces = 405.77 ounces = 405.77 / 128 gallons = 3.17 gallons.
Thus, if you get 12 liters every 100 kM, your mileage is 62 miles per 3.17 gallons, or 19.56 miles per gallon.
To summarize the conversion, if you use x liters every 100 kM, your mpg is 234.7 divided by x.

General Motors Corp. says it has built a test sedan that's able to carry five people and travel about 80 miles on a gallon of gasoline.
But the GM Precept, developed as part of a joint effort with the federal government and other automakers, shows just how much new technology had to be applied to reach the goal of 80 mpg -- and how far away much of it remains from everyday use.
While the Prodigy gets about 70 mpg and sticks to the basic outlines of today's mid-size sedans, GM's engineers had to break several conventions to get that extra 10 mpg.

Next year, the team plans to modify the stock engine, which is permitted with certain restrictions, to eke out a few more fuel-efficiency miles.

ET 07/01: Higher miles per gallon standards would save Californians more than $1 billion dollars annually
According to the report, Drilling in Detroit: Tapping Automaker Ingenuity to Build Safe and Efficient Automobiles, it would be economically and technically feasible for automakers to meet a standard of more than 40 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2012 and 55 mpg by 2020, nearly a 75 percent increase compared with today's fleet.
Improving standards to 40 mpg would save car owners from $3,000 to more than $5,000 at the gas pump over the life of a vehicle.
This is because a more efficient transfer of power from the engine to the wheels, which has no impact on vehicle safety, would account for most of the increase in fuel efficiency.
