Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) is located on the south west corner of the South Island of New Zealand.
Milford Sound is located about five hours' drive from Queenstown; many tour buses to the Sound depart from there, as well as much pricier helicopter tours.
Milford Sound is named for Milford Haven in Wales, and the Cleddau River which flows into it is similarly named for a Welsh namesake.

Milford Sound is the most northerly of the fiords indenting the south-western coastline of the South Island; it occupies the trunk portion of a formerly glaciated valley system cut deeply below the surrounding mountains.
The Arthur and Cleddau Rivers occupy the Milford Valley and enter the head of the fiord; a delta built across the mouth of the Arthur Valley by the Cleddau River is slowly cutting off part of the Sound to form a freshwater lake.
Milford Sound offers what is probably the most spectacular fiord scenery in the southern hemisphere, and the well-known and striking views of Mitre Peak from the head of the fiord form the subject of innumerable paintings, postcards, posters, and pictorial postage stamps.

Milford is by far the best known of all of the fiords and the only one that can be accessed by road.
It is approximately 16km from the head of the fiord to the open sea, which means visitors can comfortably travel the length of the fiord to open ocean and return on one of the many cruise options available in one and a half to two hours cruising time.
Motorists are advised to fill vehicles with petrol in Te Anau, although supplies are available at Gunns Camp in the Hollyford Valley and at Milford Sound.

Milford was settled in 1639 as part of New Haven Colony, and was a popular summer resort until the 1920s; it was incorporated as a city in 1959.
Milford has a fine natural harbour on Long Island Sound and was a major oystering centre from the mid 19th century until pollution ruined the business late in the 20th century.
Previous to this, the earliest-known use of the phrase occurred in the pamphlet, "Ye Slaves," written by George Milford and published in December, 1912.

Doubtful Sound cruises are more expensive, because they are much longer and more involved: You must take a boat across Lake Manapouri, then a motor coach trip on a rough road over Wilmot Pass and down to Deep Harbor, where you finally board another boat for the actual Doubtful Sound cruise.
Milford is a longish drive on a twisty (albeit spectacular) road.
The road to Milford is terrific, though,going through the tiny tunnel is an adventure, and just through the tunnel on the left is a spectacular natural rock-whirlpool formation, for a short walk.

We had fabulous views of the sound, including two of the most famous Milford Sound icons; Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls (we didn't get any pictures while kayaking, so I scanned in a postcard showing Mitre Peak).
I realized the sound was large, but got a really appreciation of the scale when one of the large cruise ships passed by Bowen Falls and it looked like a little toy boat.
The steep granite cliffs surrounding the sound don't soak up any of the rain, so it all runs directly into the sound and creates a layer of fresh water on top of the salt water.
