Mile as the southernmost atoll of the (eastern) Ralik Chain of Atolls saw frequent contact with people from Kiribati (former Gilbert Islands) to the south, and today a number of people of Gilbertese extraction live on Mile Atoll.
The development of Mili air base began in in autumn 1942 when the Korean and Marshallese labour force building the seaplane base on Majuro was transferred.

The most important atolls and islands form two groups: the Ratak Chain and the Ralik Chain (meaning "sunrise" and "sunset" chains).

For the adventuresome angler, however, legendary fishing venues such as Bikini Atoll are only a starting point in tapping the wealth of gamefish opportunities to be found among the 29 atolls and five single islands comprising the Marshall Islands.
After a rewarding trip to Bikini in September, 1999, it occurred to me that most of the atolls with their characteristic loop of islands strung together by coral reefs are either uninhabited or lightly populated – one of the positive trademarks for a pristine fishing experience.
Atolls are irregular in shape with many having finger-like points that create visible current eddies and upwellings, providing a richer biomass environment than the open ocean.

After the occupation of Kiribati, prepairations at Mili were stepped up, with the development of the air base in the autumn of 1942 when the Korean and Marshallese labor force completed the base at Majuro, and were transfered to Mili.
The base was begun very late in the war, when Japanese resources were being stretched and when Japanese shipping was under attack by U.S. submarines, the base development is characterised by a relative absence of large concrete structures, such as command buildings, power stations or bunkers.
As the war turned against the Japanese, Mili was the target of eighteen months of ceaseless bombing by US aircraft.

The Republic of the Marshall islands consists of 29 atolls each made up of many islets and 5 islands in the central Pacific between 4 degrees and 14 degrees North, and 160 degrees and 173 degrees East.
The atolls and islands are situated in two almost parallel chain-like formations known as the Ratak (Sunrise) group and Ralik (Sunset) group.
This atoll is approximately 160 square miles in area with a lagoon of about 150 square miles.

The journal contains the crewman's recollections of what survivors told him about the mutiny and their 22-month stay on Mili Atoll.
The details of the mutiny itself are sparse because the only written accounts are this journal and the partial journal of a 15-year-old boy who was busy at the helm while most of the murders were happening belowdecks.
