MDW has a multitude of responsibilities ranging from performing expert concerts with the U.S. Army Band, rendering honors at Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknowns, to protecting the Nation's capital.
The command was integral to the planning and execution of the state funeral on behalf of President Gerald R. Ford, who was laid to rest Jan. 3, 2007, in Grand Rapids, Mich. It is the core element and Army component of Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region.

For this mission, its primary unit has long been the 3rd Infantry Regiment, more often known as the 'Old Guard,' who in addition to their ceremonial duties in and around the national memorials and monuments of the area, have had a secondary role as quickly available combat troops to respond to any crisis.
The location of the headquarters is the same as the MDW, Fort Leslie J. McNair, located in Southeast D.C., north of the Anacostia River, near to the Washington Navy Yard.
However, all indicators point to only a few extra military personnel being assigned to expand the headquarters staff, which is probably being initially set up by giving existing MDW staff more duties.

The Army Military District of Washington based its Defensive Driving Course-Personal Computer (DDC-PC) training on the National Safety Council's defensive driving workshop.
There are 35,000 active duty and civilian personnel in the district, said Cheryl A. Humbolt, safety and occupational health director at Fort McNair, and about 70 percent need training to drive nontactical military vehicles.
Military district officials have estimated that DDC-PC saves about $25,000 a year.
