The Military Medal was established in wartime Britain by King George V on 25 March 1916, a year and a half after Britain declared war against Germany.
The medal was initially awarded to NCOs and men of the Army (including the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Division) for individual or associated acts of bravery which were insufficient to merit an award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal (or DCM).
The medal was subsequently awarded to women: two were awarded to two civilian women in recognition of their role during the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.

The Defense Department announced the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal for military members who directly support Operation Enduring Freedom between Oct. 24, 2001, and a date to be determined in the future or Operation Iraqi Freedom between March 19, 2003, and some future date.
The new campaign medals were established by presidential order for servicemembers who have been assigned, attached or mobilized to units operating in these areas, officials said.
Servicemembers also qualify for the medals if they have been engaged in combat during an armed engagement, regardless of the time spent in the area of eligibility, or were wounded or injured and required medical evacuation from the area of eligibility while participating in an operation or on official duties.

In our effort to secure medallic recognition for the brave men and women who fought and won our nation's longest war, we are working arduously with members of Congress to secure inclusion of a provision for the Cold War Victory Medal in the National Defense Authorization Act for 2006.
With that being said, the Cold War Medal, in and of itself, is still a noble goal, the current certificate is a joke and insult to veterans and is NOT a military award.
DoD argued that the significance and prestige of existing awards would be lessened by a generic medal or ribbon, yet large numbers of generic ribbons have been created by DoD since 1980, without concern that they would lessen the prestige of medals for Korean or Vietnam service.
