Military Trail Public School took the name of the street on which it fronts, one of the school naming policies of the former Scarborough Board of Education.
With the construction of numerous townhouses and apartments in the Morningside and Military Trail area, a need for another school was evident by 1967.
Military Trail SENIOR Public School's history was short-lived, however.

Military Road or the "Military Supply Road," evolved in 1756-57 to haul supplies 60 miles westward from Elizabeth, (then called Elizabeth Town) through today's sites of Newton and Walpack Center, to Fort Johns on the Delaware River for distribution to the other forts along the river.
Military Trail is one mile long and climbs steeply, then descends steeply, about 200 feet.
Military Trail is for hiking only: no bicycles, automobiles, or motorized vehicles of any kind are permitted on the trail.

The Military Road developed in 1756 to haul supplies from Elizabethtown to Headquarters for distribution to the other forts along the river.
It is at this point an old trail, barely passable, goes over the mountain to Brinks Road in Stokes State Forest and then follows the present day road to Tillmans Ravine and crosses the Flatbrook to Walpack Center.
Farmers used the Military Road to travel from the river to Walpack Center and the interior.

After the military halted its operations, the community recognized the importance of this area and the Boise Front for recreation and wildlife values.
Please avoid the volunteer trails that meander through the brush as this area is set aside for wildlife to enjoy.
This trail links the Cottonwood Creek and Freestone Creek drainages and is part of the "North by Northwest" crossing of the lower reaches of the Boise Front.

This is the westernmost rail trail in the state, extending from the small community of Milton in the south to Whiting Field Naval Air Station (NAS) in the north.
Trail Length/Surface: Blackwater Heritage is 7.0 miles, non-motorized paved (asphalt 12’ wide); Military is 2.2 miles, non-motorized paved trail (asphalt 12’ wide); equestrian unpaved trail parallels a portion of the paved trail.
The equestrian trail itself begins about one mile north of the Milton Trailhead, but equestrian access is available at the parking area located at Munson Highway (see parking location identified on map).

Although not a cattleman, Chisholm became a well-known figure on the trail and eventually the route north became known as "Chisholm Trail." Roughly paralleling the later route of U.S. Highway 81, the Chisholm Trail entered the Indian Territory near the present-day town of Terral, Oklahoma.
The trail was not exact as the drovers often varied the route to avoid swollen streams or take advantage of good grazing areas.
By 1889 the Chisholm Trail was abandoned altogether, the victim of westward-moving settlement.

The trail runs along the southern borders of Governor Dodge and Blue Mound state parks.
The limestone-surfaced trail is open to hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchair users in late spring, summer, and fall and snowmobilers and cross-country skiers in the winter.

Today, thanks to the military, enormous construction progress is being made this summer on the new Fort-To-Sea Trail project, which will replicate the Lewis and Clark expedition’s original footpath between Fort Clatsop and the Pacific Ocean.
