Military dolphin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Military dolphins were used during the First Gulf War.
More controversial rumoured uses of military dolphins include training them to lay underwater mines or to kill enemy combatants, or even civilians, such as Vietnamese skin divers during the Vietnam War.
The Russian military is believed to have closed its marine mammal program in the early 1990's.

Dolphins may need to have 2 brains because the maximum size for a single brain may be about 10^11 neurons, the size of the brain of single-brained humans.
Dolphin brain cells are more uniform and less specialized than Human brain cells Dolphins are born with about 40 percent of their brain mass, and reach full brain development in about 10 years, while Humans are born with about 25 percent of their brain mass, and reach full brain development in about 18 years.
In case a dolphin might leave its assigned area, or otherwise become unreliable, an explosive charge on the underside of the harness would be detonated by the USA Navy monitors, killing the dolphin and leaving a neat, fist-sized hole on the underside of the neck of the dolphin.

 Dolphins of War
Dolphins were trained to speed towards a Vietnamese frogman and skew him with a lance strapped to its beak.
Dolphins are also being trained in the swimmer nullification program, where a long, hollow hypodermic needle is placed over the snout of the dolphin for injecting compressed CO² into the enemy frogmen, the pressurized gas forcing the frogman's internal organs out of his body orifices.
Dolphin experts now say that Navy research is now focused on using the dolphins for their echolocation to detect long-range nuclear missiles, and there is a growing fear that the Russians, who have also exploited dolphins abilities for warfare purposes may use the animals to counter-attack the Americans.

 Dolphins exploited for military purposes
Dolphins have been used by the military mainly since the cold war, due to their extraordinary capabilities and use of echolocation.
The dolphins used in Iraq are reported to form part of a wider unit of dolphins and sea lions that have been trained by the US to detect mines and even enemy divers.
Meanwhile dolphins from the US Navy have been used in various parts of the world such as in the Baltic Sea (LINK to Import of Military Dolphins to Germany), Alaska, Hawaii, Florida, the Persian Gulf, Vietnam and are currently used in the Iraq war.

As you know, the navy dolphin program is top secret, thus we really don't know which dolphins are in the war zone and which are standing by to be trained to enter the war zone, but yes, I have met all of them.
In the case of the US Navy dolphins, along with the inherent dangers of the duties they are called upon to perform, the suffering caused by the training, transport and keeping in captivity of this species is well-documented and a cause for great concern.

The dolphin was found this week on a beach in nearby Latvia, but was taken to a leading maritime museum in the Lithuanian seaport of Klaipeda, 350 kilometres west of the capital Vilnius, for further examinations.
The museum denied rumours that the dolphin could have been one of five U.S. military dolphins that were recently taking part in mine sweeping exercises off the Baltic coast.
All five dolphins were accounted for and had since left the region, the museum said.

A SQUAD of former Soviet Navy dolphins, trained to kill enemy divers and blow up ships, have become the world's first "animal mercenaries", after they were sold to Iran by the Crimean authorities, who could not afford to keep them.
Although dolphins have a popular image as clever and friendly, during the Cold War both the US and the Soviet Union developed secret training schools where the animals became skilled in detecting mines and carrying explosive charges which would explode on contact with enemy ships.
Despite the prospect of his beloved dolphins being used by the radical Iranian regime, Mr Zhurid said their welfare was his paramount concern.

Dolphins are amazing, but my concern is that if the Iraqis know what the Americans are doing with them, they will harm any dolphins they see, whether they belong to the Americans or not.
When carried properly, dolphins should either be suspended and in a carrying device outfitted with holes so their fins can hang through, or they should be supported on a spongy device, with holes dug out for their flippers.
The only mitigating statement that really makes sense is that the dolphins are well-trained to avoid the dangers, and that in performing their functions, they significantly reduce the risk of loss of many other lives (human).
